Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - January 28, 1975, Lethbridge, Alberta Tomato shortage felt in Rhodesia SALISBURY, Rhodesia (CP') In the 1930s, Eddie Cantor used to sing: "Tomatoes are cheaper, now's the time to fall in love." By Cantor's standards, it's a poor time (or romance in Rho- desia. Tomatoes are, literally, out of sight. A Bloody Mary is harder to find than genuine scotch whisky and there are severe shortages of tomato soup, sauce and ketchup. There was a tomato-crop failure at the beginning of 1973, caused by frost and blight, which virtually wiped out the supply used for processing. Several dis- tributing and bottling firms report that their stocks are almost exhausted. There is a reasonable supply of table tomatoes, grown by small crop-holders, but these are unsuitable for processing. The scarcity will disappear in a few weeks, when plants are ready for harvest.
