The Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - January 26, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta 6-TMI LITHMIDai HERALD January M, 1974 Firing Squad' War film facts refuted by witness OTTAWA (CP) A movie that resurrects an incident in which Canadians provided German prisoners with guns to shoot two court-martialled fellow prisoners after the end of the Second World War had its North American premier here last night Italian-made, The Firing Squad starts out by stating "This story is true But a Hamilton, man who witnessed the events depicted said the story as related by director Giuliano Montaldo in his film is about "two-to-five per cent true A member of the staff of the armed forces history director said about the only thing true in the picture is the fact that the two men, both alleged deserters, were killed with Canadian-supplied weapons A release by the distributors of the film, which will be shown across the country, said Montaldo exercised "cer- tain fictional licence Frank Trmal, who was there at the time as a German navy lieutenant, and Philip Chaplin, senior researcher for armed forces director of history, suggest that's an un- derstatement. For instance, the film made all the Germans army men when actually they were navy men and it depicts a Gen Snow who corresponds to nobody involved in the affair Montaldo even had the gen- eral's car flying the Maple Leaf of in those carrying four stars, a United States method of indicating the rank of the passenger But the essential fact that Canadians, running a camp for surrendering prisoners near Amsterdam, the Netherlands, just at the close of the war, provided the guns has never been disputed Mr. Trmal said he believes the shooting could be classified as a war crime. The film shows all the Germans in the camp supporting the idea of the execution. Mr Trmal said just the contrary was true The story, as related by for- mer defence minister Paul Hellver in the Commons in 1966 and bv Mr Chaplin, is that the Canadians were in charge of the camp for sur- rendering German naval per- sonnel in May. 1945 Show Times Saturday January 26 PARAMOUNT THEATRE Short Subjects 7 00 9 05 ASH WEDNESDAY 7 25 9 35 LAST COMPLETE SHOW 9 05 ADULT NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN PARAMOUNT CINEMA Short Subjects 7 15 930 AMERICAN GRAFFITI 7401000 LAST COMPLETE SHOW 9 30 ADULT ENTERTAINMENT COLLEGE CINEMA THEY CALL ME TRINITY 6 30 10 00 TRINITY IS STILL MY NAME 8 20 LAST COMPLETE SHOW 8 20 ADULT ENTERTAINMENT Sunday January 27 PARAMOUNT THEATRE TERROR IN THE WAX MUSEUM 800 VAULT OF HORROR 9 40 ONE COMPLETE SHOW 8 00 ADULT NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN PARAMOUNT CINEMA Short Subjects 8 15 AMERICAN GRAFFITI 8 40 ONE COMPLETE SHOW 8 15 ADULT ENTERTAINMENT COLLEGE CINEMA THEY CALL ME TRINITY 8 00 TRINITY IS STILL MY NAME 9 50 ONE COMPLETE SHOW 8 00 ADULT ENTERTAINMENT Open Sunday, January p.m. Just completed large 1112 sq ft on a 55x140 ft lot Three bedrooms on mam floor plus dining room Your BBC 384 Only S22 900 full price for an older North Side two bedroom bungalow in excellent condition Large 75x1475 lot BBC 441 For viewing call Come in and see this brand new three bed room home Has separate dining room car- port bath off master bedroom Your JIM BBC 378 BLOCK BROS.
