Ottawa OTTAWA (CP) Prices for top quality steers dropped by J3 a hundredweight in Toronto and drops of to were recorded in western centres as sales were down Jit nine public stockyards this week, agriculture department figures show- ed Friday. Prices for lower grade cows, used for hamburger, were generally steady in most centres with Calgary reporting a gain of 75 cents while vealer calf prices dropped by SI because of limited demand. TORONTO: Top-grade heifer prices ranged from steady to 51 lower than last week. All classes of feeder cattle and calves were firm throughout the week. Prices for good lambs were steady because of the good demand while prices for top grade hogs dropped by GO cents early in the week to recover 85 cents by mid-week and an additional 60 cents at the end. WEST: Top grade heifers at Saskatoon retained their steady prices from the previous week while active trading at Alberta yards saw prices gain between 50 cents and because of strong demand. Steers weighing more than 750 pounds also were steady although ,Saskatoon prices declined by 'because of moderate trade. In Edmonton, heifers of more than Livestock 550 pounds gained steer calves 400 to 575 pounds gained at (lie start of the week only to lose between U .50 and 52 by the end: Heifers 401 to 050 pounds ut Edmonton closed at lower prices because of poor trading.
