JANUARY 25th AND FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1st 12 MIDNIGHT-MOVIES Mayan art plundered The plundering and looting of ancient treasures and artifacts has gone on since time immemorial, but for it still to be taking place in our 'enlightened age' seems to be a very real tragedy. It is taking place and tak- ing place in far flung areas where policing is not so present. Especially serious is the plundering and steal- ing of Mayan art that is happening in Guatemala. This will be the subject of an Arts '74 Special on Sunday, January 27 at p.m. on CBC-TV The Maya Crisis.' One of the saddest sights in the hemisphere is a jum- ble of smashed stones lying in the inner courtyard of the National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology in Guatemala City. The stones are what remains of a score or so of Maya stelae. (Stelae is the word used for free standing relief sculpture, usually in stone.) These stelae, once richly inscribed, were plac- ed by the Maya in front of their magnificent temples in the tropical rain forests of Guatemala.
