LETHBRIDGE, ALBERTA increased turbidity and nutrient enrichment of the water. At the Lethbridge Research Station, we have shown that aquatic plants can be controlled effective- ly and safely. We are now investigating methods for selective removal of tall aquatic plants, which are the most bothersome, while leaving the low-growing sub- mergent vegetation. This practice should remove nutrients, leave a covering to stabilize the lake bed, and provide Greenhouse ____ -v. fly control A minute wasp, imported from England, is gaining attention as another form of biological pest control. For example, Chara which only grows about eight inches high, forms ex- cellent cover for small aquatic animals such as freshwater shrimps and daphnia that provide food for fish. Pure stands of Chara have developed at Henderson Lake following injection of a mixture of the herbicides diquat and paraquat underwater to give a concentration of 1.5 parts per million in the water. This dosage will kill all vascular plants except Chara. After 72 hours, however, all traces of the herbicides disappear and the water can be used safe- ly for irrigation. PURE STANDS At dosages of 0.5 to 0.75 parts per million, treat- ment with the herbicide mixture will result in pure stands of Richardson pondweed. Dosages in this "ill all other native pondweeds as well as other rooted submergent aquatics. Because of the abundance of tubers and seeds, stands of Richardson pondweed provide excellent feeding grounds for ducks. Repeated treatment with dosages up to '1.0 part per million between mid-May and June will produce beds .of water milfoil. Milfoil starts growth slowly in the spring and becomes es- tablished after the other species have been killed. These are examples of selective or prescription control' of certain sub- mergent aquatic plants. More research is needed to refine our program and to extend it to the emergent aquatic plants. Aquatic vegetation control is a new field and there is still a lot of work ahead. Initial progress has been promis- ing and should lead to other selective control measures in the next few years.
