Maj -Gen. All Murtopo, Su- harto's personal assistant for special affairs, said the riots during the visit of Japanese Premier Kakuei Tanaka were "clearly an act of subversion and treason." A total of 775 persons, many of them students, were arrested during and after the rioting, in which police and troops killed 11 persons. Murtopo said some of those arrested revealed that the masterminds of the demonstrations included members of the defunct In- donesian Socialist party and the Islamic party Masjumi.
