They searched for and found some typical Cana- dian teen agers. That's how three young students with no previous acting experience Jenny Munro, Michael McVarish and Robert Martyn found themselves playing key roles in the CBC-TV drama Baptizing, to be seen on the network's Per- formance series Sunday at 10 p.m. Baptizing is a sensitive but candid story of a teen age girl's first love affair and ensuing dis- illusionment, set in a small Ontario community in 1951. It was adapted by Patricia Watson from a chapter in Canadian novelist Alice Munro's -seller Lives of Girls and Women, ft's produced for Performance by David Peddie and directed by Allan King. "Age was so recalls producer Peddie, and we weren't satisfied with professional actors who auditioned for the parts. Most of the actors who could do it were about 25 and just looked wrong for the roles. So we decided to cast three amateurs if we could find the right ones." Adaptor Patricia Watson was bemoaning the dif- ficulty of finding the right to play the central character Del to author Alice Munro when the novelist mentioned that she had a 17 year old daughter Jenny who just might be right for the part. Jenny was 'forthwith sum- moned from her home in London, Ont. to CBC Toronto. The part of Garnet, a youthful religious zealot who records his sexual con- quests as scrupulously as his religious converts, pos- ed a seemingly insoluble problem until one day Patricia Watson was on her way to David Peddie's office for a script consulta- tion when she noticed a tall, handsome youth sitting around the CBC lob- by. By the time she located Peddie to have a look the lad had gone, but several day's diligent searching finally located Michael McVarish.
