Lethbridge Herald {Newspaper} - 1974-01-15,Lethbridge, Alberta Tueedsy, January 1S,1«74—THE Lf THMIOOI HERALD—1» Fraser Canyon snowbound, Salmo to Crestón closed !U VANCOUVER (CP) -Tourist facilities were taxed to the limit in the snowbound Fraser Canyon Monday night as hundreds of travellers sought refuge from stranded vehicles. A Greyhound bus, a score of semi-trailer trucks, and up to r 100 cars were reported ‘ trapped in the area, which has had about three feet of snow since the weekend. “No one is suffering any hardships but the tourist facilities from Lytton to Boston Bar are being taxed to the utmost," an RCMP spokesman at Lytton said. The bus was turned around by highway department officials after it encountered impassable sections near Jackass Mountain. It travell-' ed back to Lytton, where the dozen or so passengers were , put up for the nigbt. The RCMP spokesman said there was “a string of trucks on both sides of the road” at Kanaka Bar. Telephone service along that section of the highway was out. GROUP FREED Further south, highway ■ crews from Boston Bar 85, miles northeast of Vancouver, plowed their way through ' heavy snow to reach a group trapped by snowslides at 1 Hell’s Gate in the Fraser Canyon Monday night. The stranded group had spent five hours in the Hell’s Gate Cafe after their three cars were trapped in a tunnel a quarter of a mile away. ‘ A highways department _ snowplow led them out of their snowy prison late Monday. " Police said although a, number of cars were left abandoned and were still on the highway Monday night, all occupants had been accounted for and provided with accommodation. The Fraser Canyon section of the Trans-Canada Highway was closed Monday night by a massive snowslide at Jackass Mountain, between Lytton and Boston Bar. A highways department spokesman at Bosfbn Bar said much of the snow removal equipment had to be taken off the highway by nightfall because of the danger of slides The Canadian National Railways main Line near Boston Bar was closed in several places, and passengers were flown between Vancouver and Kamloops. A spokesman from Canadian Pacific Railways said trains were still running, but are running many hours late due to snowplow operations. The Rogers Pass section of the Trans-Canada Highway, ' ‘ t snowfall, which had a six-foot ! was closed Monday night, ano the Salmo-Creston section of the southern Trans-Canada was closed by a snowslide. Police said vehicles with chains were getting through the Hope-Princeton stretch of southern Trans-Canada despite heavy snowfall at' Allison Pass. The road west of Alexis Creek in the Chilcotin was closed by heavy snow and highways department spokesman said it will take several days to plow it out. Problems were compounded at Revelstoke, where municipal crews refused to work overtime to remove more than two feet of snow from the streets because they claimed the city had been stalling on contract negotiations which started last September. France may miss ECM oil talks Our aircraft slowly changing role BRUSSELS (Reuter) - Hie nine-country European Common Market will be represented as such at next month’s proposed conference of oll-uslng countries, but a question mark still hangs over French participation. Foreign minister! of the nine, including France’s Michel Jobert, agreed here today that the group should be represented by the president of its decision-making councilor ministers, West German Foreign Minister Walter Scbeel, and by the president of its executive commission, Francois-Xavier Ortoli. All European Economic Community states also have been separately invited to at- tend the meeting Feb. 11, and all made it dear tbey would attend except for Jobert. He told reporters France still has certain reservations about attending, and a decision still has to be made. But be accepted that Scbeel and OrtoU should represent the community in Washington and that the nine should agree on tbeir joint position in advance of the conference at their next foreign ministers’ session here Feb. 4 and S. Jobert said France prefers that consultations among consumer countries be beld in tbe framework of the Organization for Economic Coration and Development in ans. OTTAWA (CP) - Nearly 2Vi years after Canada decided to discontinue its nuclear strike role In NATO, its aircraft still have not reached their full potential to fulfil tbe new role. Tbe CF-104 squadrons in Europe still are in the midst of a *20 million program of revision that started in 1972 when the aircraft were shifted to providing tactical support for ground troops. Military authorities say the aircraft will not reach their full potential for tactical sup* port until mid-1973 when the last of new equipment is installed. They are considered serviceable until 1978. They say it has taken this time to plan necessary changes, seek and evaluate new equipment, decide on purchasing it and installing it. Meanwhile, tbe capability of the planes has been steadily climbing from Jan. 1, 1972, when three nuclear bombs were removed from each one. WORD IN 1*71 Canada announced jo August, 1971, that it was getting out of the nuclear strike role and that the three CF-104 squadrons would be switched to conventional weapons. The aircraft had been carry* ing nuclear bombs since their acquisition in the 1960s. The ground support rote calls for the same low-flying, highspeed attack as did nuclear strikes. The difference is that in a nuclear strike a Angle plane, flying day or night and in ali weather, had only to hit near the target. Now the aircraft work in pairs and the pilot must see the target and be far more accurate. The changes, some of which are complete call for: —Installation of a ^millimetre cannon at a cost of $4-2 million; —Installation of a new gun-sight at a cost of $9.8 million; —Increasing the capability of the plane from three bombs to five bombs or a combination of bombs and rockets. Rocket motors made in Winnipeg are being tested now; —Acquisition of a new family of bombs; —Installation of an airborne radar warning receiver at a cost of $8.7 million. This last is an essential system that warns of an anti-aircraft devise aimed at the plane. Authorities say they would like an aircraft to do tbe work of both the CF-104 and the CF-101—the Voodoo interceptor charged with guarding Canada from intruding aircraft.
