MP to give up his seat LONDON (AP) John Storehouse, the British MP who disappeared in Miami, Fla., last November and turn- ed up in Australia a month later, has applied to relinquish his seat in the House of Com- mons, the government an- nounced Monday. Edward Short, government floor leader in the House, said Stonehouse is applying for the stewardship of the Manor of Nor'thseat. This is a device to permit an MP to give up his seat. There is no provision for the resignation of an MP from the House of Commons. He can only apply to the government to be appointed to a non- existent office under the Crown. Holding office under the Crown bars any Briton from holding a seat in the House of Commons. There are a number of such fictitious posts used for such resignations. The most-often used is the Stewardship of the Chiltern Hundreds. Stonehouse disappeared late in November while on a busi- ness trip to Miami. At first he was thought to have drowned. Stonehouse was arrested by Australian police at Christ- mas time on suspicion .of il- legal entry. A bizarre tale of his wanderings, by plane from Miami to Honolulu to Australia to Copenhagen to Singapore and back again to Australia was unveiled. All the time he was travelling on an illegal British passport issued in the name of a dead man. Stonehouse was later released from custody and allowed to stay in Australia on the grounds that being a member of the British parliament, he could not be considered an illegal im- migrant. U.S. picks jet fighter WASHINGTON (AP) The defence department chose the General Dynamics Corp.'s YK16 jet Monday as the United States Air Force's new supersonic air-combat fighter, potentially one of the biggest military aircraft programs in history. After more than six months of competitive flight testing, the General Dynamics single- engine YF-16 won over the Northrop Corp.'s twin-engine YF-17 for a contract which ul- timately may be worth up to billion in worldwide sales. Full-scale development and then production 'of the plane are expected to generate thousands of jobs. The air force plans to buy more than 650 of the lightweight fighters at a cost of nearly billion. Pentagon officials estimate worldwide sales may reach planes. The announcement followed the hottest competition in many years, not only between two big defence contractors, but between the United States and France. Four NATO countries soon' will select between the U.S. lightweight air-combat plane and the rival French-built Mi- rage F-l. The Netherlands, Belgium, Norway and Den- mark are in the market for 350 fighters to replace their aging U.S.manufactured F-104s.
