Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - January 14, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta 24 - THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD - Thursday, January 14, 197J SOUTHERN GIBRALTAR?-The commandant-general of South African Defence Forces, Gen. R. C. Hiemstra, describes South Africa as a "southern Gibraltar." One of the main issues at the upcoming Commonwealth conference in Singapore will be Britain's proposal to sell arms to South Africa, which that country claims it needs to defend shipping routes around the Cape of Good Hope and for defence of the western world from an imminent Communist takeover. Disease kills by age 40 ATOM'S 9 TO 5:30 P.M. FRIDAY orewide earance NEW YORK (AP) - Doctors from the National Genetics Foundation have examined 95 members of a Midwest family afflicted with a deadly genetic disease which kills by age 40. This was the biggest attempt on record, the founda- tion said, at "genetic counsel-ling"-an attempt to help people faced with the threat of a hereditary disease. At a meeting in Soux Falls, S.D., the doctors were able to detect early neurological signs of the disease, in young members of the Swier family, for Apple industry-seek imports ban TORONTO (CP) - Delegates to a two-day national apple con-; ference Wednesday passed a i resolution asking the federal j government to prohibit imports ] to Canada of apples and concentrate apple juice from offshore countries. All but one of the 50 delegates agreed to seek an end to such imports after first discussing whether it would be more feasible to ask only for an import quota. The delegates, including federal and provincial government representatives, are meeting to examine the problems and objectives of the apple industry. Delegates also recommended the federal department of industry, trade and commerce assist the apple industry in a massive promotional campaign to increase sales of Canadian apples in both domestic and export markets. URGE JOINT EFFORT Other resolutions passed included: -The federal government, should use apples and apple [ products in a scheme similar to the national school lunch program in the United States. -The federal government and apple industry should join forces to effectively open more markets for Canadian apples in other countries. -The federal government, should effectively prohibit the! consignment sale of apples entering Canada. -Imports of apples and apple products should be prohibited from countries whose policies have the effect of closing their markets to Canadian apple exports. Delegates said the Canadian apple industry faces a crisis and "it is time our government took a strong stand." Three decorated for ivar ivork OTTAWA (CP) - The government of Jordan has decorated three Canadians for their work with an emergency medical team sent to Amman to help treat casualties of the recent war, CARE of Canada announced Wednesday. Dr. John V. Fowles, a Toronto orthopedic surgeon, and members of the team he headed were awarded gold medals. The two other Canadians receiving the award were Maurice Dig-nard, a nurse from Montreal, and Rachelle Marquis of Saint-Louis-du-Ha Ha, Que., an x-ray technician. The team, based on Tunisia, was sent to Jordan by MEDICO, an organization designed to train medical personnel in developing countries. It is a service of CARE, an international voluntary organization designed to relieve the hungry and foster self-help programs. BAD WINTER According to folklore, a bad winter is foretold when the holly is thick with berries and the dogwood smothered in blossoms. the first time. Visible symptoms- slurred speech and loss of balance-develop when the victim is in his mid-20s. At a news conference, Dr. William B. Nyhan, pediatrician and geneticist from San Diego, Calif., said there is no cure for the disease, called spinal cerebellar degeneration, but that with genetic counselling, members in line for the disease can stamp it out simply by not reproducing. Most of the family came from nearby Colton, S.D., where two afflicted brothers, Kenneth and Vernon Swier and their families, live. Other relatives came from five states and one foreign country for 12 hours of tests and counselling. From the day's work, Dr. Nyhan and two other doctors were able to find that 57 family members under age 30 are in line for the diesease and have a 50-50 chance of being afflicted; 14 definitely have the disease, and 12 members had early signs indicating probability. Dr. Nyhan said an estimated 120 families in the United States suffer from the same disorder. NERVE DETEROIRATES The disease results in the deterioration of the nerve fibre from the spinal column to the cerebellum cf the brain, which controls motor co-ordination; the eventual shrinkage of the cerebellum, and deterioration of nerve cells in the brain stem which causes difficulty in coughing and swallowing. By age 30 to 35 the victim is usually confined to a wheelchair with loss of motor co-ordination and speech. By age 40 the victim is usually dead. DOCTORS AT SEA DURBAN (Reuter) - The South African Medical and Dental Association will hold its annual meeting this year at sea to avoid embarrassment to over-teas visitors from South Africa's racial - separation regulations. The association has chartered the liner Reina del Mar for the March conference, which will be held in international waters.
