Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - January 13, 1972, Lethbridge, Alberta 10 THE lETHMIDGt HERALD Thurldoy, January 13, 1972 Rangers place five players on all-star squad Selectors don't look past top three clubs MONTREAL (CP) Selec- tors didn't look beyond New York Rangers, Montreal Cana- diens and Boston Bjiiins to pick the ]2-man nucleus of the East Division team which will oppose the West Division squad in the National Hockey League's 25th annual all-star game, Jan. 25, at Bloomington, Minn. The Rangers, division leaders at the half-way mark of the game schedule, placed five members on the team, selected by a poll of'East Division mem- bers of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association and an- nounced by the league today. The Bruins, second to New York at the mid-way point, placed three men on the team, Including the only unanimous Bobby Orr the Canadiens, cur- rently third, had four players selected. Voting was based on five points for a first-place ballot, three for a second and one fur third. The team, with vote totals bracketed: Dryden, Montrea Gilles Villemure, Netar game point leaden. Each 10 points, Mahovlich scor- ing six goals. Tremblay will be making his seventh all-star appearance, "ilbert has played in five pre- vious games; Orr in four; Es- poslto three; Cournoyer, Ratelle ind Park two each; Smith, Vil- emure and Hadfield one each. Ironically, neither Esposito nor Orr have a point in all-star competition, despite their record feats in regular-season action. The defencemen and for- wards named today have ac- counted for only 14 points in previous all-star games, and 10 of the 14 were by Mahovlich. Cournoyer has one goal, while Smith, Gilbert and Tremblay each have one assist. The 10 Vest Division defencemen and orvards nave a total of seven goals, eight assists and 15 nulls. The Snow Bowl tourney was organized to help promote com- petitive sports at the junior high school level and will be held In conjunction with National Bas- ketball Week in Canada which runs from Jan. 15-22. The tourney is divided into two divisions with four teams competing in each. In the boy's division, the Vul- can Warriors, Paterson, Catho- lic Centra] and the host Noble Coyotes will take part in the one-day affair while in the girl's division a team from Hie pre- vious mentioned schools will participate. The Snow Bowl will officially open Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with a girl's basketball encounter and will conclude Saturday night at with the boy's championship final. The host Noble Roadninners will meet in the opening game at 10 a.m. against Catholic Cen- tral and will be followed by the first boy's contest which sees the Vulcan Warriors lairing on Catholic Central at .a.m. The second girl's game will be run-off in the next affair at p.m. between Vulcan and Paterson while at p.m. the Noble Coyotes and Palerson will finish the first round of play. The losers of each division will then meet in the consola- tion side of the tourney at p.m. and p.m. while the winners will move into Uie championship bracket.
