Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - January 13, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta 46 - THE IETHBRIDGE HERAlD - Wednesday, January 13p 1971 4 -" 1 A stroll in California Family plans 1,200-mile walk ON FOOT OR BUST BY 2008 - The Carl Ghormley family of Los Angeles plans to walk the length of Cali- fornia's shoreline by the year 2008. They have done 161 miles of the proposed 1,200-mile stroll. LOS ANGELES (AP) - A family of six is walking the length of the California coastline-1,200 miles. Speed is not the goal and at the present rate the family would not reach the Oregon line until the year 2006. Since SeptemberK1964, Carl Ghormley, noy 50;" his wife, Harriett, and their three sons and a daughter have been hiking northward along the beach. They started at Tijuana, Mexico, and 6% years later have progressed 161 miles to Playa del Rey in California. The hike is merely an occasional weekend venture for the family. "It's strictly a low-keyed, fun-type family affair," says one of the sons, Justus, 28. "Whenever we get the urge we take off for a day or two of walking. DRIVE TO BEACH They leave the family home in suburban Rolling Hills, drive to the beach where they ended their last hike and resume walking. Sometimes neighbors accompany them. They've walked 35 days so far, averaging 4.6 miles each day. "By projecting what we accomplished so far," said son Miles, 18, "it looks like it will be about 2008 when we finish." "By then Dad will be 89," added Tom, 17. "We've promised to push him along in a wheelchair the last years of the walk if that's what it will take." The hike has had long interruptions-from March 14, 1965, to July 31, 1986, while the Ghormleys were getting in and out of the art gallery business and from June 4, 1967, to Nov. 10, 1968, white Mr. Ghormley was recovering from a broken ankle. Computer dating services provide poor match-ups NEW YORK (AP) - Several dozen lonely people who paid hundreds of dollars to "Computer Cupids" say that what they got for their money was quite different from what they expected. They came forward at a public hearing here held by state Attorney-General Louis J. Lefkowitz to determine what kind of controls, if any, should be placed on the booming industry. There are some 28 such computer dating services in the city. Walter P. Gordon, a longdistance runner who stands six feet one inch and weighs 140 pounds, testified a computer dating service which charged him $500, matched him with a girl who was five feet two inches and 185 pounds. Byron Ross, 24, of Brooklyn said he paid $500 for the name of a girl who turned out to live in Connecticut. Harriet Weiner, a middle-aged widow, said she paid $395 for a computer match-up with a man who was old enough to be her father. Stephen Milgrim and Robert Friedman, presidents of computer-dating firms, urged the state to license the matchmaking business to save the industry from "quick-buck aritsts" and "cheapie or marginal firms" Hockey player's home looted TORONTO (CP) - Thieve! broke into the home of hockey player Mike Walton during the weekend and took about $1,000 in goods, including a radio, tape recorder, television set, record player and camera. Walton, a centre with Toronto Maple Leafs, was out of tow* recuperating from illness which has kept him out of National Hockey League competition for more than a month. AFFLICTS MANY LONDON (AP) - The British Medical Journal reported "restless legs" in bed afflict five per cent of all persons, causing them to wave their limbs about or get up and walk around.
