Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - January 10, 1975, Lethbridge, Alberta Ask Networks permit profanity Dick Kleiner wfien script fits the story Page 5 DEAR DICK: A lot of profane language is being used in certain TV shows. Are these words and in the script or do the stars say them as a kick or whatever you want to call it? E. RUSSELL SEIPLE, Ala. Actors never ad. lib, at least not on dramatic shows. The scripts are read and approved by the networks' and there are no changes. Talk shows are something else again. There it's all ad lib. The networks will permit a few "hells" and "damns" on dramatic shows these days, providing they fit tlie story and aren't just used for shock value. DEAR DICK: Would you please tell me if the fellow who played Kung Fu at first took his own life. I am sure I read it in the paper but my son tells me the same man is playing the part now as when the series started. PEARL KAUSCHNER, Cogan Station, Pa. Always believe your son. David Carradine created the part of Caine on the ABC-TV series, Kung Fu, and he's still playing it. DEAR DICK: What happened to the old Rachel of Another World? Will she ever be back on? MRS. T. B., Palestine, Tex. The "old Rachel" has been off the NBC soap opera for two years now. That would be actress Robin Slrasser, who left the New York based series because she and her husband (actor Laurence Luckinbill) felt their future was in Hollywood. For the past two years, Rachel has been played by Victoria Wyndham. DEAR DICK: Could you please tell us about the Roller Derby games. How much is for real and how much is an act? RONALD NOVAKOVICH, Worland, Wyo. I'm told that the ratio between real and act is aboiit 50-50. Generally, my informant says, the basic scenario is planned ahead which team will win and by about how much but then they let the players ad lib the details. Many of the fights are choreographed ahead of time. DEAR DICK: Could you please tell me if The Great Gatsby starring Mia Farrow and Robert Red- ford is an original or a remake of an Alan Ladd movie. If it's a remake, please tell me what year the first one was made. OLGA ADAMS, New Orleans, La. Alan Ladd did make a version of The Great Gat- sby, back in '48. But you really can't call the current release a remake. They were both based on the Scott Fitzgerald novel. You wouldn't call Jesus Christ Superstar a remake of The Greatest Story Ever Told, would you? DEAR DICK: Is Shirley Temple dead? If not, how old is she? And why did they quit showing her show? MELANIE McMAHAN, Mobile, Ala. Shirley Temple Black, now 46, is very well and very much alive. She has been at the United Nations and recently became U.S. Ambassador of Ghana. The chances are the Mobile sta- tion stopped running her films because they had gone through the cycle several times. But the odds are they will start them up again. DEAR DICK: Settle a serious argument. Could you tell me if more people watched Rhoda's wedding on Monday, Oct. 28, or watched the Atlanta Falcons Pittsburgh Steelers football game? CHARLES Gregor, Metairie, La. According to CBS, the audience for Rhoda's nup- tials numbered 46 million, compared to 19 million for the game. That may be because the Rhoda show was a special event, but I suspect it is symptomatic of the beginning of the end for the Monday night foot- '.all game, at least with Cosell. I have a hunch the public is beginning to tire of Cosell and his big words (many of them used in- DEAR DICK: Could you please tell me if the houses they use on the soap operas or any other show are real houses. L. W., Carl Junc- tion, Mo. Most of the interiors are sets, built in the studio. Oc- casionally, particularly in feature movies, they shoot in real homes. Exteriors are sometimes real, sometimes sets. Odds are that nearly 100 per cent of soap operas are shot on sets built in studios. DEAR DICK: I would like to know how much the truck and equipment cost for Squad 51 on the TV program, Emergency. JOHN PACE, Montour- sville, Pa. The Los Angeles Fire Department says that the truck costs around There's another or so of equipment on each vehicle. DEAR DICK: I would like to know the origin of a line from a movie. The line is widely quoted. "Badges? Badges? I don't need no stinkin' Where is it from? JEANETTE ALTERMAN, Alameda, Calif. It is a classic line, and it comes from the classic 1948 film, Treasure of the Sierra Madre." DEAR DICK: In the old Riverboat series, was Burl Reynolds one of the cast? If not, who was the first mate? P. STALL1NGS, Eight Mile, Ala. It was Reynolds. He was the first mate to skipper Darren McGavin on that cheerful program. DEAR DICK: What is the second to the last line m the song Archie and Edith are always singing at the beginning of the show, All In the Family? DIANE HALBHUBER, Pendleton, Ore. Lots of people don't get the words of that line. It goes? "Gee, our old LaSalle ran great." I guess the reason people miss it is because they never heard of a LaSalle that was a fine old car, in the Cadillac class in the '20s. DEAR DICK: I am 11 and I like exciting shows. One of these is The Night Stalker. The last episodes had me on the edge of my chair. Rut what happened to it? Last week True Grit was on and now Guns of Navarone. Did it get zapped? MILE ADOLPH, Champaign, III. No, so far it has escaped zapship. It was just preempted for a couple of weeks for movie specials but it is still on the air. DEAR DICK: Can you please tell us who played the star role in the movie, Valdez Is Coming. Was it George C. Scott or Burt Lancaster? JOE AND PAM, Killeen, Tex. It was Burt Lancaster. DEAR DICK: What is the meaning of the title, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Who was (or is) Virginia Woolf? Why should anybody be afraid of her: A. A., Fort Collins, Colo. Virginia Woolf was a noted English novelist. She died in 1941 and presumably never frightened a soul. But when the Disney song, "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad became popular, the literati made a pun out of it, subbing poor Virginia's name. Writer Edward Albee just borrow- ed the pun as a catchy title for his play and movie. DEAR DICK: Who's the new guy on The Young and Restless that plays Brock, and has he made any records? LINDA DICKERSON, Hannibal, Mo. Beau Kayscr is the new guy playing Brock. He's made one record. He recorded his own song, She Knows How to Please Me, with a rock group in Toron- to. It obviously wasn't a memorable disc because Beau can't even remember the name of the group.
