Vauxhall Needles and Pins have divided their club membership into two groups, one for experienc- ed and one for inexperienc- ed sewers. District agriculturists Jamie Williamson and Lynn Grant were guest speakers at the December meeting of Grassy Lake 4- H Club. Impromptu speeches presented by Wayne McCoy, April Warburton, Joddi Shaeffer, Neil Herbst and Gayle Morris highlighted the December meeting for Warner 4-H Club. Prospective members and interested parents met Dec. 16 at Mr. and Mrs. Cy Rebalkin's home in Vulcan to organize a district 4-H horse club. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Pavan and Joannie of Lethbridge were present to outline aims and objectives for such a club. An election of officers was held with the following result: Sandy Rebalkin, president; Joannie Pavan, vice-president; Betty Fisher, secretary; Brian Husby, treasurer and Pat Love, librarian. Junior leaders were to be appointed at the next meeting along with a name for the club. Don Sckielke addressed the December meeting of Lethbridge 4-H Light Horse Club, telling members how to feed their animals the correct amount of food. Club membership has now reached 35 persons. The re-organization meeting of Timber Trails 4-H Beef Club was held in October. Elected officers are as follows: president, Danny Larson; vice-president, Peggy Dwyer; secretary, Heather Glenn; treasurer, Bruce Mowat; historian, Laurie Glenn; club reporter, Debbie Delinte; social committee, Barbara Glenn and Richard Hewitt. The leader is Berwyn Pisony with his first assistant, Dave Glenn. At the November meeting, Dr. Zacher of Pincher Creek gave a very interesting talk on the dis- eases and vaccinating of calves. PLY MANUAL Eight scientists at Agriculture Canada's Biosystematics Research Institute are working on an identification manual of two-winged insects of North America. When completed, -the manual will be one of the best of its type in the world. Sid Lore to head livestock The Alberta government has appointed a new livestock commissioner. J. Sid Lore will head up the animal industry division position to develop and ad- minister policies and programs for expansion of Alberta's livestock in- dustry, primarily beef cattle, sheep and swine enterprises. Test plots flooded Researchers at Agriculture Canada's Central Experimental Farm are flooding test plots in an effort to dis- cover the precise causes of winterkill in field crops. Low temperatures do not appear to be the primary cause of winterkill, the scientists say. They are concentrating their work on the effects of various types of snow-and ice covers.
