Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - January 8, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD - FRIDAY, JANUARY 8, 1971 She's neither dull nor prissy Barbara Eden still dreamy By JOAN CROSBY HOLLYWOOD (NEA) - Barbara Eden is like this: She was having lunch in the Hollywood Brown Derby when she spotted Sidney Sheldon, the man who produced her eminently successful series, I Dream of Jeaimie. He didn't sec her. She called, "Hi, Sidney." He turned. She said, "It's Barbara." Now that's humility. Somewhere there's got to be something wrong with this lively, lovely, likable female. But whatever it is (maybe she once killed a fly), no one can find it. S. PHONE 327-8889 LETHBRIDGE To some people such good ness might make her dull. But she's not. Neither is she prissy little miss with her hands folded neatly on her lap. She's all woman and just plain very happy. A national magazine once assigned a writer to do a story on her. The piece was rejected by the editors with a note saying: "Only the Blessed Virgin Mary is as nice as you've presented her." The writer called her and begged her to tell of any scandal in her background. She laughed as she remembered telling him, "If there is one, I'm not going to be dumb enough to tell you." She says she does too get BARBARA EDEN angry at times. "You should see me with my son (he's five) and dog," she says. S'he loves her husband. Mi ;hael Ansara, her son and her dog, a German shepherd puppy named Rufus. She thinks animals are marvelous creatures for an actor to observe. "I once had a poodle named Maggie who had cream color hair and big brown eyes," she says. "She was very alert and her eyes darted everywhere She was warm and loving and not too bright but she always did the best she could. She was Loco, the character I was playing at the time in 'How to Marry a Millionaire,' and I used the dog in my characterization." She misses the people she worked with on Jeannie. "When you've had a good group to work with, and the series ends, it's like getting a divorce," she sighs. "It's sad." She's a regular on the four Changing Scene musical specials and she'll be seen on ABC's Movie of the Week, "The Feminist and the Fuzz," on Jan. 26. In the comedy, she plays a women's liberation type. In life, just as you would expect, Barbara does not feel herself to be a member of a badly oppressed sex. 'We're not built to be the equal of men, so, physically and psychologically, we shouldn't have to compete," she contends. "I'm sure a woman doctor or lawyer must fight to gain recognition. But as for bank clerks and secretaries, I think a man should earn more than a woman. Eventually she'll quit and marry and he'll be paying the bills. She'll want him to be earning a good salary." Barbara is more than willing to do another TV series. "Jeannie was a nice experience for me. It's not easy, though, finding a series I'd be interested in. My husband is accusing me of being too careful. He keeps asking, 'What's the matter with doing a pilot?' Well, when I do one, I want to love it a lot." (Newspaper Enterprise Assn.) I New majority returns Sunday Anyone who dismisses Sunday afternoon TV as nothing but sports and religious programs obviously hasn't watched CBCs The New Majority. Beginning Jan. 10, at 4 p.m. on Channel 7 the popular hour-long program will again interpret and reflect the world from the viewpoint of the under-25 generation. Aimed at a general audience, the series will begin its second season with a new magazine format, a wealth of interesting topical features, and the continuing conviction in the importance of the opinions and interests of the "new" majority of young Canadians aged 25 and under.
