Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - January 7, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta Training program set up for snowmobile drivers EDMONTON (CP) - The Alberta government is forming a snowmobile patrol to act as both a policing and training program for snowmobile drivers, Youth Minister Gordon Taylor said in an interview here. "The concept, which is evolving slowly, is based on the ski patrol," Mr. Taylor said. "They will have no power to arrest, it is a self-disciplining thing. "It's impossible to have policemen chasing after snowmobiles everywhere in the province." The youth department has started a training school, Mr. Taylor said, and plans to issue certificates identifying trained drivers as patrol members. "They will be given badges and maybe some type of uniform later," be said. Mr. Taylor said the program will evolve slowly and plans are not definite yet. Some of the patrol members will be attached to clubs to enforce already stringent snowmobile regulations. "We want to keep it a sport and not have a few people spoiling it for everybody," Mr. Taylor said. Bird sanctuary fund climbs STREETSVILLE, Ont. (CP) - A fund established to aid naturalist Roy Ivor, who saw his Windtoglane Bird Sanctuary destroyed by fire nine days ago, now totals $4,011. Water resources authority is recommended in brief EDMONTON (CP) - The establishment of a provincial water resources authority, similar to the Oil and Gas Conservation Board, to administer all phases of water resources was recommended here in a | brief to the Alberta government. The brief, presented by the I Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geo-physicists of Alberta, urged that the recommendation, originally made a year ago, be actively pursued in 1971. The association also recommended establishment of a water research advisory committee reporting to the proposed water resources author-ity to coordinate and develop all aspects of water resources I research. The association, with more than 6,300 members, also rec ommended that: A system of public hearings be instituted prior to the beginning of any major water resources development; that policies and principals governing water resources planning and land use be made clear and readily available to the general public; that consideration be given to the immediate expansion of government committees associated with various aspects of water resource management so that they will include representation from the association.
