Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - January 6, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta mr. TRUDEAU Trudeau sees danger OTTAWA (CP) - Before leaving for the Commonwealth prime ministers' conference Tuesday, Prime Minister Trudeau said there is a real danger to the organization over the question of British arms sales to South Africa. But he was sure the Common wealth would continue to exist after the meeting. Mr. Trudeau told an airport news conference that it would be a mistake for anyone to exaggerate his role as a compromiser or diplomat for the meeting. He said he would not be performing any miracles. But he hoped that an accommodation could be reached so that no countries would feel obliged to leave the Common wealth. Mr. Trudeau said that while such issues as the arms sales are talked about prior to these conferences in the form of impending crises, these meetings accomplish many other important tasks that are not so exciting to write about. He said he has asked for discussion on techniques for improving the democratic process. VALUABLE OPPORTUNITY Whenever heads of govern, ment meet, he said, there's a valuable opportunity to discuss methods of governing. He said that if this were the only purpose served by the Commonwealth, "I would consider it of great value." He said governments everywhere are facing a challenge of credibility and it is important that heads of government exchange views on how to govern effectively in modern society. So far as British arms sales are concerned, Mr. Trudeau said the British government seems determined to go ahead with it while some African countries are determined to prevent it. "I don't know whether a compromise is possible" but efforts would be made to try to find areas where one or other of the parties would "give a little." Oil sands seen food source EDMONTON (CP) - It may be possible to grow foods on the vast Athabasca oil sands, the Research Council of Alberta savs. Dr. H. W. Habgood, chief of the fuels branch of the research council, said scientists at tne council have succeeded in growing protein-rich yeast and bacteria on samples of oil sands collected from northern Alberta. Both the yeast and the bacteria would lie suitable as a food supplement if they could be grown and harvested economically. "It's a long shot but not as long as might be generally thought," Dr. Habgood says "We have to find a strain of yeast or bacteria that grows fast enough." The oil-saturated sands, source of crude oil, cover about 10,000 acres in the Fort McMurray area, 250 miles northeast of Edmonton.
