The guest soloist is Wellington, a St. Bernard billed as a "houndentenor." Wellington, the first canine soloist signed by the orchestra, will participate in a pops performance of The Stoned Guest, a half-act opera. A spokesman said the per- formance is sold out. The dog, with two movies to his credit, will share the spotlight with Su Harmon, an off-coloratura; Bonnie Hurwood, a mezzanine- soprano; Michael Sells, a bargain counter tenor; and Prof. Pete Schickels, a basso blotto who composed the opera. SEEKS BAN NEW YORK (AP) A theatrical manager is seeking to bar the famed Soviet emigre dancers Valery and Galina Panov from dancing under any other management. The manager, Maxim Gershunoff, said in papers fil- ed in New York state Supreme Court that he signed a two- year contract with the bus-. band and wife ballet team last July in Israel. The Panovs emigrated to Israel last June after a world- wide campaign protesting the Soviet Union's refusal to per- mit them to leave. Thursday, January 2, 1975 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD 7 Film prospers despite critics HOLLYWOOD (NEA) "The Night Porter" has been creamed by the critics but that doesn't seem to be stopp- ing the public from seeing it. It's a Joseph Levine film and its negative reception by the critics is rolling off Joe's broad back. He was opening a cable from London, telling him how his film had smashed a London box-office record. He laughed. "I'm he said, "and I've made or produced or bought or imported 191 movies. COME AND EXPECT MIRACLES TO HAPPEN Presented by FULL GOSPEL BUSINESS MEN'S FELLOWSHIP INTERNATIONAL New York Times Service STOCKHOLM There is a wet snow about and it brushes the dark windows. Nothing in a Stockholm winter morning compels the use of sunglasses but Lena Nyman sits in her apartment with a pair perch- ed on her nose, a white shawl around her shoulders. Miss Nyman is one of Sweden's leading 'young actresses. She works at the National Theatre under such directors as Ingmar Bergman and Alf Sjoberg. Last year, she played Hedwige, the child who kills herself in the "The Wild which the com- pany took around Europe to stunning effect. For the moment she was not talking about this. She dis- cussed with considerable nerve a subject that for several years she had trouble even thinking about. Seven years ago she burst upon the world in her sturdy and appealing entirety as the main character in "I Am Curious It was a fresh, funny and naively grave picture. What won it most attention, however, was that Miss Nyman often had no clothes on, and at various times used this state for the purpose it is best suited to. "I Am Curious" was a critical success abroad. In Sweden, on the other hand, it made people furious. The critics called it gross and offensive, and they were par- ticularly harsh about Miss Hyman. She says she was un- prepared for the reaction; certainly she seems to have been unprepared for how it would touch her. "You she said seriously, "some people get shocked about sex. I was shocked that everyone was so shocked. It was such a quarrel here about that movie. Wow! "You could believe nobody in Sweden had ever seen a naked man or woman." Miss Hyman's response was to turn away from movies she has not made another once since, though by now she is beginning to consider it and concentrate on the theatre. It was a long battle against her film image. Her first major success was Polly Peachum in Brecht's "Threepenny Opera." She went on to build her stature in a number of classical and modern parts. For a long time, though, people harked back to "I Am Curious." "When I made my first success they wrote that this time she is very good, let us see next she related. "The second time it was ah, she is with a big perhaps. The third time it was' a small perhaps. The fourth time it was simply: She Is." "Lena is one of the most im- portant young actresses in Sweden a national theatre official commented. Wage hike REGINA (CP) The Saskatchewan government will announce an increase in the J2.25 hourly minimum wage in January, Labor Minister Gordon Snyder said Monday. Mr. Snyder, in an interview, said it would be premature to say what the new wage will be. He added it will be an- nounced following the Jan. 8 meeting of the Saskatchewan minimum wage board but did not say when it would come into effect. British Columbia's minimum wage of J2.50 is the used to getting my head batted in. I've reached the point now where I don't give a damn. My whole career has been built by the press, one way or the other." He wouldn't say what he personally thought of "The Night the Liliana Cavani film which co-stars Dirk Bogarde and Charlotte Rampling. "I don't have to like a pic- ture he said.
