WINNER OF DECEMBER FAMILY ALLOWANCE DRAW Mrs. Onna Veters, Taber, Alberta Woolworth Times, fashions change film need for sex symbol LOS ANGELES (AP) What would happen if Marilyn Monroe came into the film world today? The question was put to a Hollywood high lama who handed down his decision from a mountaintop: "Today Marilyn Monroe would be denounced by Gloria Steinem for perpetuating sex- ual sterotypes, picketed by the gays for unfair com- petition and relegated to the role of serving beer to Robert Redford and Paul Newman as they planned their next ca- per." Times and fashions change and the sex symbol seems to have disappeared from the film scene. Where does that leave a gorgeous female like Valerie Perrine? "The only parts for women in films nowadays are whores and she sighs. Valerie is stunning enough to be a Las Vegas nude dancer. And she was. She changed careers when an agent asked her two ques- tions: "Have you ever acted? Do you think you can Her answers were no and ELKS PUBLIC BINGO 1251 3rd AVENUE SOUTH EVERY THURSDAY 8 p.m. 16 GAMES NEW BLACKOUT Played Till Won (No Number Limit) IF WON ON A BLUE BONUS CARD (No Limit Purchased) PAYS DOUBLE No one under 16 years allowed PUBLIC-UPSTAIRS ELKS and INVITED GUESTS ONLY DOWNSTAIRS WEEKEND ENTERTAINMENT FRIDAY, JANUARY MEN" SATURDAY, JANUARY 4th MEN" RANCH BOYS" Year RESOLUTIONS Most of us make New Year Resolutions. A meeting with director George Roy Hill brought her the role of Montana Wildhack, the sexpot movie star in the fantasy sequence of Slaugh- terhouse 5. Next she played an auto race track groupie in The Last American Hero. She gives a remarkable performance in Lenny as the late comedian Lenny Bruce's stripper wife. It is the kind that seems to make an Academy nomination imperative. Valerie Perrine is "26 or 27, somewhere around blonde and perfectly propor- tioned. She was born in Gal- veston, Tex., and spent her early years in Japan, where her father was stationed as an army officer. She attended convent school in Yokahama. She studied psychology fora year at the University of Arizona, dropping out after an attack of mononucleosis. Then she decided to study a differ- ent kind of psychology, in Las Vegas. "I had to break out of there, and Las Vegas seemed like a good change of she said. "My dad disowned me. Mother was more under- standing." Valerie started in the dance line at and rose to be a lead dancer at a week.. She is surprised when inter- viewers inquire, "How did you feel about dancing in the "Somebody asked me that the other a dumb question. .How did I feel? I didn't feel anything at all. It just becomes part of the job. My own mother saw the show and said, 'You know, Valerie, there's so much happening on the stage that I didn't notice you had no clothes on." Clothed or not, Valerie proves herself an accom- plished actress in Lenny, por- traying the downward slide of girl1 addicted to men and dope. Her problem is what to do next. She observed that Barbra Streisand stands alone among today's film actresses in having vehicles groomed for her. "The problem is that men write the scripts for movies and they write about she said. "There are no Cam- illes nor Scarlett O'Haras for actresses to play. "So I guess I'll go on play- ing hookers. It doesn't bother me too much; I'm only in it for the money. "Why money? So I can be free. You need money to do the things you want to do, like take off for Paris for two weeks." Actor, critic i join protest NEW YORK (AP) Actor Dustin Hoffman, critic Clive Barnes and others demonstrated for about two hours near the Soviet Mission to the United Nations yester- day to protest against the im- prisonment of Vladimir Bukovsky. Bukovsky is a Soviet dissi- dent who, the demonstrators said, has been imprisoned in his homeland for most of his adult life on charges of cir- culating anti-Soviet propagan- da. He is said to be gravely ill.
