Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - January 2, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta Saturday, January 2, 1971 - THE UTHBRIDGE HERALD - 9 Big decisions for Rocky Mountain coal OTTAWA (Herald Ottawa Bureau) - It looks like 1971 will be a watershed year in the Canadian Pacific's history with key decisions to be made on shipping Rocky Mountain coal both east and west. And it looks more and more like those decisions will be a positive "all systems go" to build a $200 million pipeline westward through the mountains to tidewater and expand the unit-train system eastward across the prairie to the lake-head. "Canadian Pacific enters 1971 with growing confidence in the economic soundness of slurry pipelining," declared N. R. Crump, chairman of the CP conglomerate, in a year-end prospectus of 1971 possibilities. "A process for retrieving coal from a coal-water slurry mixture was developed during the past year and CP research resulted in the establishment of a pilot test plant that produced a sufficient quantity of reconstituted coal for successful commercial coking tests."
