Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - February 28, 1975, Lethbridge, Alberta 12 THE LETHBRIDOE HERALD Friday, February 26, Showmen may picket Klondike Days activity EDMONTON (CP) A spokesman for independent Canadian owners of midway rides and concessions says pickets will be set up at Ed- monton's Klondike Days Ex- position this summer unless more Canadian operators are given space at the fairgrounds. Victor Sorrell, director of the committee for Canadian showmen, said in an interview here that Canadian operators have trouble getting space at major Canadian exhibitions. He said most of the space is sold to American groups. Mr. Sorrell said his associa- tion wants 30 per cent of the Midway space at Edmonton designated for Canadians. Picketing at the Pacific National Exhibition in Van- couver is also a possibility, he said. Canadian operators are con- sidering asking the federal and provincial governments to pass legislation forcing a Canadian content rule at fairs and exhibitions, Mr. Sorrell said. The governments make substantial grants to exhibi- tion associations across the country. But Al Anderson, general manager of the Edmonton Ex- hibition Association, said the federal grant to the associa- tion pays only 50 per cent of the prize money awarded at livestock contests. The provincial grant applies to the over all operation of the association and not just Klon- dike Days. But the show's creator will not be able to see its national premiere. He says he will be busy that night, supervising the taping of the pilot of another series he wrote and hopes to sell to NBC. But in June, writer Alan Alda resumes his better known acting career as Hawkeye when M-A-S-H" cranks up for its fourth CBS season. Originally scheduled to start on CBS last September, We'll Get. By was dropped from the 1974-75 lineup when a United States government court delayed the start of revised prime time access rules for network programm- ing at night. The show was hastily put back in the CBS lineup last week when the network decid- ed Khan, a detective series in- stalled as a mid season replacement, was a flop and ordered it out after four shows. Fortunately for Alda, 13 We'll Get By shows already arc in the can. All he has to do is publicize the series and hope it survives in its time slot against NBC's hit, Chico and the Man. He also has to worry later about whether NBC will buy his proposed new series, the pilot he said he. began writing in December. The new project, as yet un- titled, is a situation comedy starring Jack Watson as a lawyer "who just borders on shadiness while trying to earn a living as best he Alda said. Does all this series creating he wrote a third series that ABC rejected mean he eventually plans to give up acting? "I don't think Alda said. "I love acting. Every time I perform I get a wave of feeling about how much fun it is. I don't think I'd ever not want to act." TV highlights FRIDAY CRIME-DRAMA: Rockford Files, 7 p.m., Ch. 9.
