Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - February 28, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta 28-THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD Thursday, February 28, 1974 EARLBUTZ Does U.S. face bread shortage WASHINGTON The House agriculture committee has shelved a resolution, passed by the Senate, calling for a government survey of wheat supplies to determine if the United States faces a bread shortage this spring. In rejecting the Senate in- itiative, the House committee decided Wednesday to discuss the outlook for wheat privately with U.S. Agriculture Secretary Earl Butz. The agriculture sec- retary has discounted claims by baking industry industry spokesmen that there is a threat of a bread shortage with accompanying higher prices. t At issue is a dispute between U.S. farmers and the bakery industry, which has asked President Nixon to ban all American wheat exports until July 1. Industry spokesmen also said this week that "if necessary" new export contracts should be banned. According to official U.S. calculations, reserves of "old" wheat left on hand when the 1974 crop of winter wheat arrives this summer will be down to 178 million bushels. This would be the lowest carryover since 1947. As a hedge against the possibility of shortages, President Nixon last month suspended U.S. wheat import quotas until June 30. Some Canadian wheat has since begun to move to the United States, but it is uncertain how large the sales will be. Although Canada has wheat to sell, the wheat board has stated that American buyers will have to supply tneir own transportation. Canada is approximately 100 million bushels behind in its sales and deliveries of wheat to its traditional overseas customers because of a shortage of rail cars. In another development Wednesday Congressman Robert Tiernan, a Rhode Island Democrat, announced he would sponsor legislation to set up an export marketing stamp system. Meatciitters serve notice of walkout CALGARY (CP) Meatcutters at Lucerne Foods Ltd. served notice with the Safeway-owned meat warehouse Wednesday to begin strike next Tuesday. The strike is to back up union demands for higher wages, to an hour for maintenance workers from to 17.70 for certified engineers from to for mealcuUers from and to for shippers from Plant manager Dave Stelfox said the strike would shut down the Lucerne plant but "there is nothing stopping Safeway from purchasing meat on a direct basis from meat packers."
