DEFEND MORMONS _ Gentile Citizens f Cardston Reply to Criticisms. {From the Calgary Albortan.) Cardston, Feb. 19, 1007. The recent attacks upon the Mormons of AJIiertu by Hie llovoronds Prof. Kllpatrick and Dr. Somorvtllo of tho l'resbytorlntt Church, has led your correspondent to tnako some Inquiry Into tho mnttor among tho loading mon of Cardston-tho oldest town and virtually tho headquarters of Mormon colonization in Southwestern Alberta. Tho statements appended hereto aro direct from tho gentlemen credited and in ovory Instance given over tholr own signatures. Tho thought -ful observer will noto that, with tho excoptlou of tho straightforward testimony of Mr. E. J. Wood, president of tho ecclesiastical organization in tho Alberta Stake, tho expressions aro from tho lips of men who may bo classed as disinterested wttnossos, 1 e. they have no connection whatever Jwith tho Mormon church in any way MORMON'S ARE PATRIOTIC. L. Eversfield, of tho Cardston llook and Drug Company, one of the largest stores of its kind in Southern Alberta, said: "i have been in business hero for going on three years and i And tho Mormons very good business people to deal /with. They have never interfered with me In my religion as a member of tho Church of Englan-1, nor have i over hoard of their intorferencnwlth others in this rogard. i see loss crime hero than in any other town i havo lived in tho Northwest. Tho Mormons aro as patriotic as tho native Canadians and just as ready, i believe, to defend British institutions as any of the truly Hritishstock. Tho longer that i live "among tho Mormons tho moro respect i havo for them. i ain led to believe that tho misrepresentation ol tho Mormons is fathered by prcjudico and a lack of knowledge." (Signed) S. L. EVEUSFIELD. Mr. H. A. Donovan, nephew of tho would have undertaken the task. There' is no doubt but what the eton-dy cultivation of tho land for tho Inst 20 years by thoso people has done an enormous amount to convince the outstita public as woll as residents of Alberta that this Is one of'the best wheat growing sections on tho continent. 1 was away from this sotttoment about thirteen years and left my property lit the hands (if Mr. 0. O. Oard, then president of tho Mormdn Church In Canada. Ho was assisted In attending to it by my sons. They matlo money out of tho laud for mo and all transactions wore fair and square to a pleasing degree. In regard to tho loyalty of thoso pooplo, there is no question to begin with about thoso born under the British flag, and as far as I know, nonrly all those who were citizens of tho U.S. are now clllzenstiof the Dominion. You could not oxpoct any settlor or Immigrant coming to a new country to Immediately throw off all nllcginnuo to tho country of his birth .or which ho has a natural fondness. Our opinion, as western pooplo, is, that providing tho community is law abiding and industrious, their conscience and belief is their own property. Wo must romombor that American was first colonized by a pooplo who left their native soil to be al-lowcdto worship as tholr conscience dictated and we think it Is contrary to tho principles of tho British Empire to talk of evicting pooplo from tho confines of that Empiro who aro not, so far as wo can see and knov. violate tho lawB and traditions of tho country. Tho majority of Mormons hero aro only way In which they differ from their compatriots Is in their belief-that is all. **************************** Rogers - Cunningham Lumber Co., Ltd. luceMtora to George Rogerrv--w--vfyj>t*-*g Builders' Supplies of Every Description - Wholesale and Retail eeooeeoooaooooeoooooeOM i Lumber Shingles Doore Windows Mouldings Lime Lalth Building Paper Tar Paper Cedar Fence Posts | Phone 23. GRAY ly for the last 20 years. i am oftho opinion that, tako them all around, they are the host settlers in Alberta. So far ns an outsider with an Intl-j mite acquaintance can observe, poly-; gamy is a doad lotter and tho Mor-j inons are just as virtuous and law-abiding as any. community ono could [wish to live amongst. It is a pity i that mon like Dr. Kllpatrick, away off In Toronto, who cannot possibly know anything personally about the Mormons should tako upon ilmi-lf to prcuch against and revile soino of tho best settlers In Alberta."
