Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - February 26, 1975, Lethbridge, Alberta 22 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD Wednesday, February 26, Dateline Alberta Pro-hanging group vocal CALGARY (CP) The "Voice of a group favoring wider use of capital punishment, has demanded that members of parliament who oppose the death penalty be impeached from office. The group also said Solicitor General Warren Allmand should be removed from of- fice, that MPs who do not represent voter sentiment on hanging be jailed, and that the judicial system be changed. Suuiai Credit MLA Albert Ludwig, who supports the death penalty, was forced to defend himself and the Cana- dian justice system from at- tacks by the small but vocal audience. Mr. Ludwig had been in- vited to address the group, but spent much of the evening on the defensive. He reminded the group several times that he, like them, supports capital punishment. Demonstration cancelled VERMILION (CP) About ISO students at Vermilion College called off a demonstration planned for Premier Peter Lougheed's visit to Wainwright Tuesday. Student union president Larry Bronson said the picketing was called off because an assistant to Jim Foster, minister of advanced education, said Mr. Foster would consider sending someone to Vermilion College to assess school facilities. Mr. Bronson said the students' greatest concern was that facilities and programs were inadequate. The school's gymnasium, for example, was substandard, he said. Special courses offered EDMONTON (CP) on mosquitoes opens today at Specialized innovative the University of Alberta, courses for senior graduate he f university students will be provided' as the result of a developments in the field ol co operative effort among devei0pmental handicap Subcontinent in new alignment the four western provinces, it was announced today. The first three.-day course scheduled in May at the University of Calgary. Meeting a cowgirl Queen Elizabeth shakes hands with a cowgirl while attending a rodeo yesterday in Mexico City. By JOHN HAY The Canadian Press Like the stars on a Hindu as- trologer's chart, events on the Indian subcontinent swung into new alignment this week, but the signs are not all auspicious. Only partly by coincidence, these developments occurred within hours of one another: -The United States lifted its 10-year ban on arms sales to India and Pakistan. Since Pakistan is the country that wants U.S. weapons, it was good news for Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, bad news for Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Defence Minister Andrei Grechko was welcom- ed at New Delhi airport for a four-day visit. India wants the latest in Soviet weaponry, in- cluding missile-firing frigates and submarines, while shying away from Moscow's proposals for Asian collective security. Mohammed Ab- dullah, former leader of Kashmir who was deposed and imprisoned by India in 1953, was reinstated as the state's leader by Mrs. Gan- dhi. At 69, the sheik, jailed for 14 of the last 22 years, has ap- parently given up his long- standing demands for Kashmir autonomy. Pakistan, which has always laid some claim to the Moslem population of the mountain region, is not pleased. Bir Bikram Dev, 29, was crowned the 10th king of Nepal, the strategically sensitive Himalayan buffer state between the Asian giants, India and China. India, China and the Soviet Union sent their equivalents of vice- presidents to the coronation. Also perhaps an annoyance to was the former leader of Sikkim, deposed when India occupied that tiny state several-months ago. The end to the U.S. arms embargo is seen 'as a major diplomatic victory for Bhutto, who made it his primary aim during a visit to Washington last month. The U.S., seeking belle! relalions wilh India aftei Iheir falling-oul during the 1971 Bangladesh war, hac hesitated for months t restore its mililary ties will India's foe. The decision, opposed by In dia, is expected to strengthen Bhutto's hand in dealing will domestic rivals in Pakistan and in future negotiations with Mrs. Gandhi. And it gave added signifi cance to the visit of the Sovie1 defence minister to India which has counted on the Soviet Union for militar; equipment for the last severa years. But Bhutto suffered a set back with the Indian agree ment with' Sheik Abdullah which seems to place Kashmir firmly in India's grasp. Kashmir, sandwiched between India and Pakistan has been a disputed territory since both countries won independence from Britain in 1947, and has been the scene of several minor wars. Predominantly Moslem Kashmir might have been ex- pected to join Pakistan in the 1947 partition. But its leader at the time was a Hindu who insisted on joining India, and he was naturally encouraged by the New Delhi government. The aims of Moslem leaders, including Abdullah, have varied between autonomy and accession to Pakistan. Bhutto has said for months that an agreement between Abdullah and India could jeopardize establishment of normal relations between In- dia and Pakistan.
