Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - February 25, 1975, Lethbridge, Alberta Tuesday, February 25, 1975 THE LETHBRiDGE HERALD 5 Artificial lights nurture big tomatoes The idea of tomato plants two and a half metres high, laden with fruit, grown in midwinter in Bri- tain sounds like a fairy tale. But such tomatoes really were grown last winter here in Britain, it was reported on a BBC agriculture program recently. It was the horticultural products firm Fisons that did it, to demonstrate their special plastic sacks of tomato soil you just plant the seedling through a slit in the sack and away it grows. But to demonstrate this idea in spring when you want people to buy the materials demands something special in cultural techniques for you have to grow your demonstration plants dur- ing the shortest and darkest days of the year, when, as everyone knows, plants don't grow.' Artificial light for grow- ing out of season crops is nothing new but the kind of lighting installation'that Fisons used was new. There are still only a few of'this particular type in commercial use but the advantages are so enor- ATTENTION FARMERS! The kind of lamps used are a type pioneered in Bri- tain high pressure sodium vapour. To many people of course, the word sodium spells disaster terrible searing metallic yellow street lights that turn a colourful world into monochrome. But these new sodium lamps, the high pressure type, are very different. They give a soft sunlike radiance, which shows up most colours reasonably well. The makers call it 'Solar- colour'. And not only do these lamps give a lot more light for your money nearly double, in fact but also they consume less electricity. The General Electric Co. of Great Britain succeeded some time ago in doing something that no other maker has managed that is making these lamps as direct screw in replacements for the older mercury vapour lamps frequently used for hor- ticultural and street lighting.
