Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - February 25, 1975, Lethbridge, Alberta 4 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD Tuesday, February 25, 1975 Coast kelp examined by biologist VANCOUVER (CP) Kelp and its role in British Columbia's future will be examined by a Vancouver marine biologist who calls the marine plant one of the most versatile substances known to man. Dr. Ronald E. Foreman of University of B.C. botany department has received a grant from the federal and pro- vincial governments to un- dertake a comprehensive study of the plant. "We want to be able to predict how much wet ton- nage one bed of kelp will yield per acre, the best means of harvesting it and what we can expect from regrowth after he said. The research will concentrate on beds off the- northern end of Vancouver Island and Malcolm Island in Queen Charlotte Strait. Dr. Foreman said that at one point on the coastline the kelp beds stretch con- tinuously for 25 miles at a width of feet, "and they are just a small bed." Why is kelp so important and valuable? Dried, it is a wonder weed. Kelp alginates are odorless, colorless, gelling agents that put fixative in hair sprays and keep the suds afloat in a glass of beer. Rich in iodine, kelp chips may be eaten like dried cereal. The alginates also provide the rich foam in shaving creams and sham- poo and are used in face creams, pill coatings, plas- tics (or dental impressions, toothpaste, salad dressings and fertilizers. Under ideal conditions, the snaky-tendrilled seaweed grows as much as a foot a day. Dr. Foreman said there are two main varieties of floating macrocystis with its floats and blades and the ne- reocystis with its long whiplike tentacular appen- ds ges. scratch. It takes only 10 Nereocystis is found only weeks to mature, becomes in the Straits of Georgia, growing annually from reproductive and dies.
