On index, industrials were up ,05 to 177.09, base metals .26 to 12.23 and western oils .42 to J04.36. Golds dropped 13 to 179.95. Volume by 11 a.m. was 625,000 shares, down from 848,000 at the same time Wednesday. Gains outnumbered losses 115 to 81 with 175 issues unchanged. Real estate and pipelines led advancing sectors. Aquitaine was up Yz to $6%, Nuwest % to $7V2, Shell Canada % to $34y8) TransCanada Pipe-Lines % to $32%, Noramdo % to $32>/4, Alberta Gas Trunk % to $48%, Yellowknife Bear 35 cents to |5.80 and Total Pete 15 cents to $7.00. Banks, which led the midweek upturn after Monday's slump, were off .27 to 182.07 on index. Industrials were down .11 to 178.12, the composite .02 to 174.55, papers .97 to 89.89. Utilities were up .41 to 154,07. Oils eased off after Wednesday's flurry of support following the announcement of Atlantic Richfield's new find in the Pru-dhoe Bay area of Alaska's North Slope.
