The texts, for children in Grades 3 to 6, are intended to stimulate their imaginations and curiosity and exercise their use of language. The Grade 3 textbook, Magic Seasons, leaves children to invent their own adventures for a DON KIRKHAM INSURANCE AGENCIES LTD. One or more of the books in the series have already been approved by departments of education in Newfoundland, Ontario. Alberta and Manitoba and are being considered in Quebec, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. As the series progresses, through Multiworlds, Manspace, and Mediamind, the format and the layout of the texts become even more unconventional. OFFERS CHALLENGE Mediamind, the Grade 6 text, challenges children with such concepts as: "What's a package for?" "What if our voices made Images instead of sounds?" Many teachers who used the texts on an experimental basis were enthusiastic about the children's response, but said the program was sometimes difficult to handle in a large class. "I found the kids really like it, of course, but to work it in a class of 33 or 34 is just chaos . . . ; T would never do it again with that large a group," said Michael Turriff, a teacher at St. Paul's Separate School in Toronto, in an interview. His principal dropped the texts this year, saying they were too time-consuming. A Grade 5 class at another Toronto school has had Man-space since October, but had worked its way only to Page 17. No. 005615 EDMONTON (CP) - His Imperial Highness Philip Ma-konnen, 18, second in line to the throne of Ethiopia, is Edmonton's student prince. A student at Alberta Vocational College, the prince arrived about a month ago and is staying with George Nelson, an instructor at the school. Mr. Nelson taught in Ethiopia from 1949 to 1952. Prince Pliilip is a grandson of Emperor Haile Selassie. His early impressions of school in Edmonton are favorable, he said. "1 am treated by them (students) as they treat me, and everything is fine." NO PROBLEM The prince, who has studied outside Ethiopia since 1967, said young people in his country do not cause problems. "We have a strong government which controls such things as drugs and alcohol and we have a strong police force which checks on these tilings." The state also controls newspapers, radio and television. Asked about a minor revolt In Eritrea, a province granted to Ethiopia by the United Nations in the early 1950s, the prince said there are few problems. "The situation does not look very bad," he said. "We have solved it, "There are just little things." Prince Philip, who has stud-led in Switzerland and Eng- land, said he hopes his country does not become industrialized at the expense of its culture or current living standard. "I would not like to see Ethiopia like Japan, for example." He would not like to see the country "corrupted," but would like to see it brought up to date. "Having a lot of money corrupts a country," he said, "It creates crime. "We are doing well." The prince said he believes he will stay in Canada six months to a year. He plans to ski at Banff, about 100 miles west of Calgary, this weekend. He also hopes to take up skydiving. He is interested in photography, says the prince, who says he has been surprised by Canada. He "expected it to be very British, very English." "But I have found it is Americanized. Some of both, I suppose, is good." The wreath was seen as an election-period gesture to appease Petain fanatics who had hoped the coffin would be sent to the Verdun battlefield where they have been clamoring for it to be placed for decades. It may provoke indignation among resistance veterans. Though Petain's death sentence for high treason in collaborating with the Nazis was commuted to Life imprisonment, he was stripped of all honors and died a prisoner. A palace spokesman said either or both could attend the European equestrian championships in Kiev. "At the moment there is no official invitation to make a state visit," the spokesman added. Nevertheless, even an unofficial appearance at the European horse riding championships would be a break-through. No member of the Royal Family has visited Russia since the Comm, unists took power in 1917. The Queen, Philip and Anne, 22, visited Yugoslavia last year, the first time any member of the Royal family had toured a Communist country. Anne won a European Equestrian championship in 1971, the last time the event was held.- A palace spokesman said she would go to Kiev to defend the title if she is selected for the British team and if she can find a suitable horse. Doublet, the horse <\nne rode to the European title in 1971, went lame last year, depriving her of a place on the British team for the 1972 Olympics. She has yet to find a suitable replacement.
