Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - February 24, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta Wednesday, Hbruary 34, 1971 THE IEIHBRIDGE HERA1D Shortage of dentists blocks dental scheme TORONTO (CP) _ Frank] ComptoB, editor of the Canadian Denial Association Journal, said Tuesday the association shares the views expressed by Health Minister John Munro over the difficulty of operating a national dental care plan with the cur- rent number of practicing den- tists in Canada. He said in an interview the association is concerned with the problem of personnel and the first step in any move to- wards a national plan would be to try to rectify the situation. A spokesman for Mr. Munro said the minister did not think the country was ready for such a plan. The main reasons cited were cost and the shortage of dentists. Mr. Munro tabled a special report ia the House of Commons Jonday which proposed a na- tional dental program for chil- dren as a step toward eventual dental care of the scope now given to medical care under the ational medical care Insurance trogram. Mr. Compton said there ust over practising den- ists in Canada which represent about one dentist for per- sons. Under a national dental scheme, this ratio would have to increased to one dentist for Medical centre opens March 1 TORONTO (CP) Ontario's first computerized medical centre, where a machine can learn more about a patient in two hours than a doctor could determine in two days of con ventional methods, opens here March 1. He said the costs of such scheme are being unnecessarily inflated by the lack of preven- tive care now. He said his or- ganization feels that where fea- sible, money should be spent first on education and fluorida- tioo schemes. Otherwise, be said, all den- tists are doing is "endlessly patching" which represents a considerable drain on the econ- omy.
