Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - February 22, 1975, Lethbridge, Alberta 28 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD Saturday, February 22, 1975 Falling interest rates prove strong stimulant The Herald Business By SANDRA INGALSBE The Canadian I'ress Falling Interest rates again proved to be ii powerful stimulant to stock markets this week as major indicators overcame some early weakness to close ut their highest levels in six months. The lower trend in interest rates in Canada and in 'the United States has been largely responsible for the almost uninterrupted rally which began late In 1974. A great deal of money has been flow- ing back into the market which had been in fixed income investments. The prime rate, charged to banks' most creditworthy customers, Is an important signal to other rate trends, Despite a modest drop during the first three days of the week, the Toronto industrial index recovered shdrply to end at 187.32. up 2.18: The close was the highest since the 188.46 of July 29, 1974. At Montreal, the composite index rose two points to 188.11 and the in- dustrial index 1.27 to 190.25. And, at New York, the Dow Jones in- dustrial average climbed 15.56 to 749.76, highest since Aug, 13. Helping the New York market also were figures showing a growth in the money supply, which could help an economic recovery, and indications that the rate of inflation may be slowing. --Underscoring the strength of the year's rally is the fact that the Toronto industrial index has pined 30.57 points since Dec. 31. That is more than half the 56.92-point drop of 1974, largest yearly loss since the exchange began recording such changes in 1934. The swift rise in share prices has led many analysts to believe a substantial downward movement or correction is inevitable. However, markets so far have been able to weather the selling by profit- takers. Many investors have taken ad- vantage of the price dips to buy, fear1 ing they may be left out of the rally. Gold shares were volatile at Toronto this week. Strong gains at mid-week pushed the gold index Wednesday to 456.51, highest since Nov. 18, but a sharp decline later moderated the rise. The index closed at 445.03, up 8.35. Western oils ended the week at 166.12, up 1.90. The close Friday was the highest since Aug. 16 when it was 167.54. The base metal index was lower on the week, off .96 to Volume was moderate to active at Toronto this week with 11.72 million shares traded for a value of million, down from 12.17 million and million last week.
