Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - February 22, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta READ... THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD 'CHINOOK' SOUTH ALBERTA'S LARGEST RURAL CIRCULATION The Lethbridge Herald TELEVISION GUIDE KING KOIN X LAUNDERETTE Dry Cleulu Phone 3284144 3 Ave It St. B S FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22.1974 "LISTINGS FOR SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23. TO FRIDAY MARCH 1 Filmed result of his 2 books pleases Berton Pierre Berton, on whose best-sellers The National Dream, and The Last Spike, the CBC-TV series The National Dream is based, reminisces about his role in the production as host narrator consultant. The eight-part series begins Sunday, March 3 on the CBC-TV network By PIERRE BERTON For me, the making of The National Dream, was a stimulating and rewarding experience. It is not always so when one's printed work is transferred to the screen Often enough an author scarcely recognizes his own child. But in my case, the transformation has been painless. My two books have been followed faithfully No attempt has been made to twist or distort history The major characters look very much like their historical counterparts and, whenever possible, they use the exact words recorded at the time (All the parliamentary sequences, for example, use verbatim Hansard More than that, the making of The National Dream has allowed me to take a fresh look at western Canada In the finished series you will see "me standing on the shoreline at Bute Inlet, far up the British Columbia coast, and on the very lip of the foaming Kicking Horse River You will see me perched on a rock overhanging the Fraser canyon and on the glare ice of Lake Superior in 22 'below weather You will see me at Cartier's grave in Montreal, at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, in a rock cut on the Canadian Shield, on the parched prairie not far from Calgary, at the Rogers Pass in the Selkirks and at the Yellowhead in the Rockies Over the period of about a year I travelled several times across Canada to a variety of authentic locations for some 80 on- screen appearances. It wasn't always a joy ride. North of Lake Superior in January, 1973, when the temperature dropped to 54 degrees below freezing, they had to warm my lips With hot coffee before the words emerged. And then the camera froze. And then the sound equipment froze. And then just as everything was going well a train appeared and we had to scurry off the track For one reason or another we had to do 13 different takes of the same sequence that day before our producer Jim Murray was satisfied And then there was the problem of the wind on the prairies and the diesel trucks on the mountains. The wind was so bad on the plains of Alberta that it literally drowned out all sound and my hidden microphone had to be masked with layers of foam plastic And then, at one point, I found I couldn't stand upright in the gale. In the mountains we had a different kind of sound problem. We were trying to simulate the conditions of the 1880s within shouting distance of the Trans- Canada Highway! Time and again otherwise perfect takes were spoiled by the sudden appearance of diesel trucks drowning out my voice Mornings 5 IS Understanding our World 45 O Salute to Agriculture 56 O Thought for the Day 0 Farm News 00 0 University of the Air 0 Pinnochio 0 Today Show O Captain Kangaroo 30 0 Yoga 0 Secrets of the Kitchen 00 O Farm and City Today 0 Canada A M B News 0 Today In Montana 30 0 Men Giant O Pyramid DO O Uncle Bobby 0 Audrey B Gambit 30 0 Ed Allen OR Romper Room B Hollywood Squares 0 Jack LaLanne 00 0 This Week 0 Polka Dot Door Berton's National Dream Canadian writer-broadcaster Pierre Berton, on whose best-selling books the CBC-TV series The National Dream is based, appears as host- narrator in' the eight full-hour drama docu- mentaries. The National Dream re-creating the epic story of Canada's "impossible railway" debuts Sunday, March 3 at 9 p.m. on the CBC television network Comedy special spoofs Berton on new series As everyone knows, a railroad isn't finally built until the last spike is driven m by a bigwig. When W. C. Van Home was ramming through the CPR to unite Canada from coast to coast, his men kept getting shot, knived and hung by people in opposition. Not one foot of rail had been laid in a month. The Prime Minister and a covey of politicians from Ottawa were out to twit Van Home about his tardiness. Van Home was at his wit's end, when out of the great Canadian wilderness strode a mysterious orientaj philosopher named Kwai Chang Wayne, the Kung Fu Stranger, come to help get that last spike driven. Van Home is played by Prank Shuster and Kwai Chang Wayne by Johnny Wayne, as the boys present their third comedy special this season on CBC television, Sunday, Feb 24 at 9 p m In another sketch, Frank plays the Godson, who 09 The Young and Restless O Jackpot 9 15 09 Parlons Francais 9 30 09 A B C C Schools B Puckett's General Store O Baffle 09 Search for Tommorrow 10 00 09 Lifestyle O Alberta Schools O Jeopardy 09 All My Children 10 30 O Mr Dress Up 09 Let's Make a Deal O As the World Turns ID Pay Cards 11 00 O Sesame SVtreet 09 Davis Show 0) Newlywed Game 30 09 Beat the Clock O The Doctors ODNews 12 08 09 Buckshot B Dale Harney Show B General Hospital O Another World hires effete TV producer Trevor Zoomar to stage 'television shows which extoU the glories of organized crime and the virtues of a career as a member of that select group, the mafia. Also in the one-hour special are a bevy of television commercials as Wayne and Shuster figure they should be done. PERFECT CASTING To portray Chief Crowfoot in CBC-TV's upcoming version of Pierre Berton's The National Dream, the CBC enlisted the legendary Chief's grandson, Joe Crowfoot, from the Blackfoot Reserve near Gleichen, Alberta.
