Thorpe, 44, who fears his tiny party might be squeezed even further in a pincer movement by Labor and the Tories, once said in an interview he met Turner when they both were students at Oxford in 1950 and had been drawn into Liberal circles at the university as a result. "I have only Turner to blame for getting me involved in Liberal said Thorpe, himself the descendant of a line of wealthy Tory MPs. "He first sparked my interest." Elected to Parliament in 1959 as MP for North Devon, Thorpe languished in the political wilderness for several years before his eloquent speaking ability, natural wit and broad knowl- edge gradually made him a leading Liberal spokesman. He took over the party on the retirement of Jo Grimond in 1967 when the Liberals had only 13 MPs in the 630-seat Commons and desperately needed new direction and momentum. Thorpe, a slim, elegant- looking product of Britain's elite private schools and a forthright, convincing speaker, looked like he might be the man of the hour. 1970 WAS DISASTER But his hopes were dashed in the 1970 general election when a dramatic and unexpected Tory surge dumped the governing Labor party and replaced it with a majority Conservative government. Liberal strength was slashed to five MPs. It was a bitter defeat for Thorpe who came within 400 votes of losing his own seat in North Devon. Within months a personal tragedy added to his misery when Caroline, his wife of two years, was killed in a car crash. Afterwards, Thorpe insisted on taking over full responsi- bility for the care of his year- old son, Rupert, although he says the pressures of work eventually made it essential for him to hire a nursemaid. An accomplished mimic and violinist, Thorpe slowly re- grouped his shattered party forces and set his sights on a string of byelections which opened up during the next three years. His hand-picked candidates scored some spectacular suc- cesses, storming to victory in both Tory and Labor strong- holds and enlarging the Liberal representation in the Commons to 11 members bef- ore dissolution for the general election. With the calling of the elec- tion, however, Liberal popular support, as shown by the opin- ion polls, slipped to about 12 per cent of the electorate from a steady 20 per cent during the last year. But Thorpe has begun a vig- orous fight to prevent votes slipping away to the established major parties. In his own riding, which is considered marginal, he holds a daily closed-circuit television news conference for journalists in London and has gained major attention with his recently announced policy for fighting inflation: A tax on all profits and salary increases beyond predetermined maximum lev- els. Accompanied by his new wife, the former Countess of Harewood, a concert pianist whom he married last year, Thorpe manages quick trips to other ridings where Liberals appear to nave a chance of victory. He takes his turn rapping on doors to ask for support or giving impromptu speeches from trucks and other makeshift platforms. HURT BY BANK CASE The recent near collapse of a banking firm of which the Liberal leader was a senior director tarnished his image somewhat and there were numerous unsubstantiated rumors of crooked dealing behind the scenes. But he quickly divested himself of all his remaining directorships and the incident seems to have been largely forgotten. Thorpe, given to wearing expensive three-piece .suits and gold watch chains, has managed to place in the field 516 candidates, confounding his critics and making it the biggest Liberal showing since the Second World War. Virtually nobody is betting on the Liberals' chances of in- creasing their strength. But this time nobody is ignoring them either. Inquiry urged into jailing of girl who hanged herself TORONTO (CP) The Canadian Civil Liberties Association Tuesday called .for an inquiry into a legal system that can send a troubled youngster to jail. The association made the request following the suicide of a 16-year-old Elliot Lake girl in the Don jail here Saturday. She was found hanging by a bedsheet while awaiting sentencing for theft. Calling the jail "a hell of a place for a 16-year-old A. Alan Borovoy, general counsel of the association, said he was not criticizing the judge who sent here there, "but rather the system that has provided so few options in the way of proper facilities for youngsters" in her situation. Judge Joseph Addison had ordered a pre- sentence report on the girl after she was found guilty of stealing Christmas presents valued at under She hanged herself 10 days later. Stiff gas line controls urged at Sudbury inquest SUDBURY, Ont. (CP) Stiff government guards against mixups in hospital medical gases were recommended today to the inquest inquiring into 23 deaths in Sudbury General Hospital last year. Consulting engineers who investigated the gas lines in a new wing of the hospital proposed: No such system should be put into use without a certificate of worthiness from the federal or provincial authority with jurisdiction. All pipeline, valves and fittings should be identified as installation progresses. All major changes from design drawings should be recorded daily on "as-built" drawings. Tests for cross-connections and purity of gases at outlets should be conducted by an independent testing authority.
