Low seed yields cannot be blamed on the presence of honey bees, accordding to Dr. Gerry Awram, supervisor of agriculture with the Alberta plant industry division. He says he is amazed' that anyone could believe it. and emphasizes that any type of clover crop grown in Alberta must have bees present for a satisfactory seed set. The following example illustrates the difference in yields that can be exoected in a red clover crop with and without bees benig present. Under reasonable condition, and with t/he presence of bees, such a crop could be expected to yield about 400 pounds of seed per acre. Without t)he bees it would probably yield in the neighborhood of 160 pounds per acre. Dr. Awram says bees ate also beneficial to rapeseed crops, especially the Polish types Like Span. They are said to increase the yield slightly, to make the seed larger and more uniform in size and to make the overall crop more uniform. He believes this year's poor legume seed yields were due to the unseasonably cool, wet weather and partly due to the fact that this weather prevented the bees from getting out into the crops to pollinate them.
