Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - February 20, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta Lynne Van Luven Collecting some handouts JIM TANNER LEADS VEGETABLE BOARD Tm applying myself," announced Mazie, as zany and unpredictable a neighbor as ever. "And Um glad to hear it," I replied, dropping in for our weekly visit and totally misunderstanding her meaning -as usual. "In this day of laggards and sloths, it is reassuring to see someone still believes in the old-fashioned virtues". "No, no", cried my friend irritably, "You mass the point entirely. I'm trying to escape from those old-fashioned' nose-to - the - grindstone ethics. I meant, I'm applying - for all the free handouts I can get". "What do you mean . . .?" "Well," Mazie pasued to chew on the tip of her pencil and rummage through the stacks of paper spread across her kitchen table, "first of all, I'm going to try for the Local Initiatives grant, then, I'.'l try to cadge, an Opportunities for Youth grant, and then, I'll try to wangle a senior citizen's grant and then . . ." By this time, Mazie was a little winded and had to pause for breath. ". . . THEN, if all else fails, I'll try to get a Canada Council research grant, but I hear those are the hardest." "How can you apply for any. of those grants? You don't fit into the right categories?" "Categories, schmategories," quipped Mazie flippantly. "A category is what you make of it. And I plan on making money." "It's probably completely insane of me to even ask you this," I said, "but tell me how you - lacking in initiative of any kind as you do - hope to get a local initiatives grant from the government?" "Simple as pie," responded the unflappable Mazie, "I am going to cash in on the health-food and ecology trends. You know how my back yard is always overgrown with pig-weed and dandelions? Hell, I'm not the only one - plenty of back yards look the same way. So we're going to harvest all the edible weeds, process, preserve and sell them in our own little health food boutique. We've even got a name for the place, 'The Photo - Sense - E-This', kind of obscure, III admit, but catchy." "According to our proposal, we'll maintain a staff of 10 people, require $10,000 for one summer's operation and stimulate health and community enterprise. What could be more worthwhile than that?" "I see," I answered cautiously, "And what about the OFY grant?" "Aha," said Mazie, cackling with glee. "I must admit that this proposal took a little more pondering to perfect. After all, I am not - and cannot be considered - a youth, although there's no doubt whatever of my youthful demeanor and 'with-it' ideas. So, myself and the same ten colleagues involved in the LIP program came up with an idea that is pure genius. "We are submitting a proposal, on behalf of the 18 juvenile members of our families, requesting $12;500 to build a centrally located swimming pool. It just so happens the central location is in my back yard, but no matter. The ostensible reason for the pool is to help underdeveloped youngsters gain strength and agility through water exercises." "As for the Senior Citizen's giant, I have applied - in my grandmothei's name of course -for a grant tc perfect a motorized wheel chair equipped with a pneumatic lift, so folks in their golden years can reach their vitamin supptem e n t s from the top shelf of the medicine cabinet. "And - this is the real w'n-ner - for my Canada Council research grant, I have submitt- ed a proposal outlining a detailed study of all the government grants gven in the past five years, to determine if there is mistaken allocation of government funds, and calculated dishonesty in a significant number of applications. Any more questions?" "Yes," I replied, "how do I join your robber-band of 10?" Jim Tanner of Barnwell has been elected president of Alberta Fresh Vegetable Marketing Board. Miro Tomasta of Coald ale was elected for the west district and George Friesen of Vauxhall was returned to the board for the east district. Both men will serve three year terms. Other directors for the west district are Steve Tokariuk of Lethbridge and Fred Hranac of Coaldale. In the east district Mike Putici of Taber and Robert Klok of Burdett will serve.
