In was shown that snap bean plants grown from magnetically treated seed matured more uniformly and produced higher yields than plants grown from untreated seed. Similarly, potato yields were increased if the seed pieces were subjected to magnetism before planting. These results and those of earlier biomagnetic research paved the way for the development and introduction of magnetic seed treaters that are now available commercially. In field tests on cereals on dryland at the Lethbridge Research Station, yields of wheat and barley were increased substantially by using seed that had been treated in commercial magnetic seed treaters. In 1972, Manitou spring jvheat and Gait barley grown from treated seed matured three to five days earlier and yielded about 2.6 bushels per acre more than that grown from untreated seed In 1973, similar results were obtained. Treated seed of Sundance winter wheat and' Neepawa spring wheat produced yields of 1.8 and 2 6 bushels per acre (seven per cent and 12 per cent) more than control seed. Yields of Gait barley were increased about five bushels per acre (8.5 per cent) by treating the seed before sowing. Treatment of Glenlea, a utility wheat, produced yield increases of 10 to 15 per cent at Lethbridge; however, at Saskatoon, the increase was about five per cent. For unknown reasons, preseeding magnetic treatment had no visible effect on growth or yield of Sioux oats in either test year. Further tests will be conducted in 1974 on other cereal and oilseed crops.
