The Lethbridge Herald CHINOOK "Serves the South" New wheat variety licensed for growth By DR. HUGH McKENZIE Wheat Breeder Lethbridge Research Station A new durum wheat variety, Wakooma, that was developed at the Agriculture Canada research stations at Regina and Swift Current has recently been licensed for production in Canada. This new variety is intermediate for straw strength has strong gluten, produces good macaroni. It is resistant to stem and leaf rust and to loose and covered smut. Wakooma is genetically related to Wascana, a variety licensed in 1971. These varieties were developed for the drier prairie areas and are similar in yielding ability, lodging resistance, height, bushel weight, kernel size, and resistance to rust and smut. The main difference is in quality; Wakooma has stronger gluten than does Wascana and therefore produces better macaroni. Wakooma has performed well in trials in Southern Alberta. We have found that it yields 10 to 15 per cent more than the older durum varieties, Hercules and Stewart 63, at the Lethbridge Research Station. Seed is available for commercial production in 1974.
