Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - February 17, 1975, Lethbridge, Alberta THE LETHBRIDQE HIRALD Monday, 17, 1975 Ballet demands austere devotion Western debut Valery and Galina Panov, former stars of Leningrad's famed Kirov Ballet, Idanced their Western debut last week in Philadelphia. By BILL HOLDEN WINNIPEG (CP) A young man with tights strode gracefully into the reception area and with the ease of an accomplished dancer, flung an empty soft drink cup into a trash can, holding his arm out- stretched as if a symbolic movement had just been per- formed. He turned and resumed his conversation with his fellow dancers, punctuating his words with demonstrative dance movements. The simple act of getting rid of unwanted trash would seem a routine enough chore, even for a ballet dancer. Yet it perhaps indicates the total in- volvement an aspiring dancer must have to fulfil his dream of earning a living with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. For the students enrolled in the scholarship program at the ballet, dancing is hot only a means of self-expression and fulfilment, it is a total and all- encompassing way of life. In Studio A, fragile-looking women are led through a series of gruelling routines on wooden parallel bars. A clas- sical melody provides the tempo as the dancers bend themselves into seemingly impossible positions.
