Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - February 17, 1975, Lethbridge, Alberta 18 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD Monday, February 17, 1975 Nixon worried about jail term SEATTLE, Wash. (AP) Former president Richard Nixon was eager to leam de- tails of a former aide's jail term last August and was fearful of his own im- prisonment, a Seattle new- spaper says in a story quoting friends of former Nixon aide Egil (Bud) Krogh. The Seattle Pos't- Intelligencer says Krogh described Nixon to friends as "very depressed and concern- ed about a jail sentence" as a result of the Watergate scan- dals. Krogh paid a surprise visit to San Clemente Aug. 24, about two weeks after Nixon resigned the presidency. The visit preceded President Ford's Sept. 8 unconditional pardon of the former president. The newspaper says Nixon told Krogh that if he pleaded guilty, U.S. District Judge John Sirica would give him 30 years in prison. Krogh was imprisoned for his role in the so-called White House plumbers activities. "Nixon wanted to know ev- erything about Bud's (four- month) prison the newspaper quotes sources as saying. "What it was like, how he had been treated." The newspaper says Krogh, on a speaking tour of the Mid- west, confirmed the Aug. 24 visit but declined further com- ment. The newspaper gives this account of an exchange between Nixon and Krogh when Nixon asked Krogh what he should do. "You should do the right Krogh said. "If I plead Nixon said, "Sirica would give me 30 years." "Do you feel Krogh asked: said Nixon. "In that case, don't do Krogh said. Sources said Krogh visited Nixon with the idea of helping him and telling him things had worked out well. The sources added that Ron Ziegler, Nix- on's press secretary, was cool to Krogh, but-the former president welcomed him. Krogh pleaded guilty in No- vember, 1973, to a charge of having violated the civil rights of Dr. Lewis Fielding, the psy- chiatrist who treated Dr. Daniel Ellsberg, the man who made the Pentagon Papers public. Krogh has called his sentence deserved. "Nixon thought of Bud as one of his best and a Krogh acquaintance told the newspaper.
