The meeting of geese and boys took place at Kortright Park Wildlife Sanctuary in Ontario, and the film shows and recounts the happening: "Three goslings, just hatched, attached themselves to the first moving form they saw. It should have been their parents, but instead it was Damy and Gordon," says Gibson. "Scientists call it 'imprinting on humans.' "And so, after 'adoption' arrangements were made with the sanctuary . . . they began a new life in the dry. Taking a walk along a city sidewalk was just as routine to them as walking through the grass by a river or lake. Sometimes, they were taken for a stroll, sometimes they led the way. In fact, they seemed to prefer walking to swimming." The camera follows the development of the goslings as they apply their tremendous appetites, splash around in a pan of water and behave generally as if they are very much at home. As Gibson's says, "... so much at home that I was convinced it was time to move them to my cabin by a north woods lake." As the goslings grew in size and beauty, Gibson and bis family began wondering whether they would fly when the time came, without the influence of the parent bird. Young Gordon Gibson helped overcome their apparent reluctance by "flying" for them, flapping bis arms, and the young birds were soon imitating him. Gibson's camera caught the moment of triumph when they took off into the air for the first time. Then came the dilemma of how and when to separate these "people geese" from the Gibson family.
