The entire series is narrated by Mountbatten and each episode deals with a significant period in his life. The material used came largely from Mount-batten's own archive material, and was supported with film footage from the Imperial War Museum and other sources. A film crew travelled with Mountbatten to many of the places that played an important part in his career, so that he could be filmed against a background of the exact spots where history was made. The first episode, entitled "The King's Ships Were At Sea," covers the period from 1900, when Mountbaiten was born, to 1917, when he became a midshipman. Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas Battenberg was the son of Princess Victoria, granddaughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Louis of Battenberg. Thus he was bom into the Royal House of Britain, which in that imperial and monarchical age was linked by blood and marriage to almost every ruling house of Europe. His early days were spent in that troubled period preceding World War I. His father became Britain's First Sea Lord, the professional head of the Royal Navy, with the most powerful fleet in the world, and he grew up in the centre of things, with the great statesmen and seamen of the time continually calling at his home in London. Thanks to the very able First Sea Lords, Sir John Fisher and Louis' father, and a notable First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr. Winston Churchill, when World War I came on August 14, 1914 the Royal Navy was ready. In Churchill's words, "The King's ships were at sea" and in Prince Louis' words to the King, "We had the drawn sword in our hand." Instead of gratitude, however, Prince Louis experienced the nation's resentment at his German ancestry and in October 1914 felt impelled to resign from his post as First Sea Lord over the family name of "Battenberg." Two years later his son, now already generally known as "Dickie," gained first hand experience of war when he joined the Grand Fleet in H.M.S. Lion, seven weeks after the Battle of Jutland in 1916. He continued to serve under Beatty's command until 1917. In that year further anti-German agitation caused the Royal Family to change its name to Windsor. The Batfenberps changed their name as well. Prince Louis became the first Marquis of Milford Haven and "Dickie": became Midshipman Lord Louis Mountbatten She's a doer Lee Grant, who stars in "Partners in Crime" an upcoming World Premiere Movie on NBC-TV, is a doer: "The important thing, I think is to work - on stage, in movies or whatever.
