Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - February 16, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta PAGE 8 'Pensions, The Dream and The Reality9 'That wonderful clay when I reach 65' More than three million Canadians belong to private pension plans. They are the lucky 40 per cent of the national work force whose retirement years will be secure and free of money worries - or are they? How many of these three million will actually get all, or even part of what they expect on retirement? These questions are examined on CBC-TVs Tuesday Night documentary, "That Wonderful Day When I Reach 65," subtitled Pensions, The Dream and The ReaSty. Written, produced and directed by Ralph Thomas, it will be telecast on the series Tuesday, February 20, at 10 p.m. In the United States, the program points out, the vast majority in private pension plans lose their pension rights. In Canada, the federal government and four provinces have legislation meant to prevent this. Yet thousands of Canadians still lose their pension rights through a list of rules in the plans or in the law itself. The Tuesday Night program looks at a number of cases where this has happened, and deals with the reasons. Today's senior citizens make up a large proportion of the nation's poor. "That wonderful day" has proved to be anything but wonderful to most of the aged citizens interviewed for the film during its three months of research and production. For most senior citizens, it was discovered, inflation is a creeping menace which soon eats up what private pension benefits they may have, and then throws them on the mercy of the government. Women seem to have even more serious problems - problems which are examined in one segment of the hour-long color film. And what about the young? their futures, to examine their worry about now. And soma The senior citizens interviewed pension plans. But to the experts think they're right, ttnat for the program all advise young, retirement is a long they should live for today and young pesp'e to look out for way off, and not something to not tomorrow.
