Paul Bunyan author dies SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Esther Shephard, who wrote Paul Bunyan in 1924 and brought extravagant folk tales of the giant lumberjack and his blue ox, Babe, to millions of readers, has died here at 83, it was announced Friday. Mrs. Shephard taught English at San Jose State University and retired' as emeritus professor in 1959. In her .highly successful book, Banyan's flapjack grid- dle was so big that it was greased by men who strapped slabs of bacon to their feet and skated on its surface. When Runyan dragged his pick he carved out the Grand Canyon. And so the legend goes, he scooped out the Great Lakes to provide a drinking pool for Babe.
