Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - February 15, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta 24 - THE IETHBRIDGE HERALD - Thursday, February 15, 1973 Intelligence role causes sensation By ROBERT TRUMBULL New York Times Service SYDNEY, Australia - Australian military units in Singapore, retained there in apparent contradiction to the ruling Labor party's pledge to end troops commitments in southeast Asia, vrere linked today to a secret code-breaking activity. Statements revealing an Australian intelligence role in Singapore were attributed to a high government source. The source was said to be Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, who gave 'an orMhe-record briefing to senior Australian media representatives today in Canberra. The report caused a sensation. Tho Labor Party has already split on the troop question before the sensitive intelligence angle had come to light. Tiie government had said that the roughly 600 troops to be kept in Singapore, following the withdrawal of small combat infantry and artillery units, were to be retained purely in a logistical capacity. CONFIRMS DETAILS The prime minister was reported to have confirmed the details of an Australian electronic intelligence operation in Singapore, first reported last Sunday by a weekly newspaper, the National Times. The paper said that the "logistics" personnel to be kept in Singapore were only a "cover" for the radio monitoring unit. The unit is said to consist of about 160 men who intercept radio messages throughout Southeast Asia. Reports said that the operation had been conducted without the "official knowledge" of the Singapore government. Australia has maintained an iriantry battalion and an artillery batteiy in Singapore as a contribution to five-power agreement linking Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom - and hence called Over-all plan for north urged VANCOUVER (CP) - An overall plan o! development for the Canadian north is necessary if resource extraction there is to prtre^ safely, ssys a Universitv of B.C. Fccitrnst. In an address to the Vancouver Institute, Dr. Norman Wlimovsky said environmental and engineering problems facing resource developers in the north are massively complex. He said all available information on ulans for the region must be relayed to the general public so the social, political and economic issues involved can be judged. "The problem is that there has been no overall public discussion of a plan for development in the north," Dr. Wilim-ovsky said. "We wouldn't have such mass public confusion as evidenced by media statements if the information was just made available." He suggested an environmental protection board be established in Canada to conduct detailed studies of environmental issues before permis-sion to proceed with any development is granted. One of the major purposes of this board, he said, would be to make availaWe to the public interpretive results of all studies. "We need a reasoned exchange of opinion on northern development from all sections of society," Wi'imovsky said. "I do believe the north will be developed, but if people don't speak ud in terms of social and political reality, it will happen by default." Sex movie confiscated MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (Reu-ter) - Police confiscated a print of the controversial sex film Deep Throat yesterday Shortly after a municipal judge ruled it'obscene and fined a theatre operator $500 for showing it. Filmed in Miami on a $25,000 budget, and featuring unusual feats of oral sex, the film has encountered legal bans or challenges in a number of cities. Variety, the show business weekly, said Deep Throat had grossed $1,182,560 through Jan. 31. Anzuk - in the defense of Singapore and Malaysia. Soon after he took office in December, following a Labor victory at the polls over the anti - communist Conservative coalition that had ruled for 23 years, Whitlam announced that Australia would not replace the infantry and artillery units when their normal tour of duty ends around the first of next year. However, he also said that Australia would keep the non-combatant personnel in place as an essential sendee to the British and New Zealand allies in the Anzuk pact. The Victoria State branch of the Labor Party criticized the decision in a resolution last Sunday as "a blot" on the Labor government's otherwise "very good" record in foreign policy, which has seen Australia's recognition of China and East Germany and moves toward diplomatic relations with North Vietnam. costs for lee TORONTO (CP) - To be appointed a federal judge is considered the ultimate step in a Canadian legal career. But the personal cost may be high. Consider Willard (Bud) Zebe-dee Estey. He's a 52-year-old lawyer who has been practising here since 1947. An outstanding courtroom tactician, his long list of clients includes such major corporations as Imperial Oil Corp. and its Canadian subsidiary, Gulf Minerals, Famous Players, the Columbia Broadcasting System in Canada. Mr. Estey's legal activities have taken him coast to coast in Canada and provided him with an annual income exceeding $100,000. One day he was in Halifax for the biggest civil trial of his career, a tax dispute between Imperial Oil and the Nova Scotia government. He received a phone call from Ottawa. It was Justice Minister Otto Lang. Would Mr. Estey accept appointment to the Ontario Court of Appoal? Bud Es'ey, a Liberal, accented and on Feb. 23 he will he sworn in by Chief Justice George A. Gale of the Supreme Court of Ontario. As a judge his income will be $41,000 a year. Not that Mr. Estey is unduly concerned about the abrupt cut in income. "I don't think there is any doubt that the legal profession is excessively over-compensated for its work,"'he said in an interview. His headaches come from winding up his professional activities. On the day the justice minister phoned, Mr. Estey had 200 cases under way, at least twice the number of an average lawyer. He must find other lawyers to take over. "I didn't really think of that before." He also must withdraw from various boards, private companies, and associations, and even the Ontario vice-presidency of the Canadian Bar Association. He has even decided to resign from a service club because many of the members are "shareholders in corporations that are bound to show up before the court sooner or later. Guard ceremony attendance rationed LONDON (CP) - Attendance at one of London's major tourist attractions, the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, is to be rationed from April 1. The government announced today that bus tour operators will have to book parking tickets in advance and only 95 vehicles at a time will be permitted to park along Constitution Hill, which runs beside the palace. Previously up to 200 buses have poured into the area for the daily morning ceremony. The government has been worried in previous tourist seasons about the mammoth buildup of traffic in the mall, which leads to the palace from Trafalgar Square. The changing of the guard coincides with the morning rush to work. /"^| SIMPSONS bears Save up to $100 No payment 'til June' Save a cool bundle during our big, preseason air conditioner sale.
