VALENTINE the word for today. The meaning, forgotten many yesterdays ago. VALENTINE to Clayton, a busy five-year-old who happily flipped his purple construction paper heart about with gay abandon, it meant giving valentines to other kids and getting them back on his birthday. _, Craig decidedly agreed, adding that people and kids got them, and candy and chocolates and Diana threw in "meatballs too" just for good measure. Robbie and Lisa sported cupids on their cut-out valentines, claiming they were angels but shrugging off any explanation about the be-ribboned creatures. Clayton, having successfully printed his name on the valentine, jumped into the conversation to offer that his valentine was going to Diana, cause that's his girlfriend. Meanwhile, Zuk and Rod claimed their moms were the expectant recipients of slightly crushed but nonetheless loving cards. On the subject of love, which is what Valentines is all about, the children drew quite a blank until Robbie said that "love is my dog Mountie." A chorus of tiny, excited voices proclaimed their love for most everything from cats they didn't have, to friends they might find, to things like "my toys" and best of all, "love is being nice." A meaning lost through time, Valentine's Day originated as a pagan celebration in the heyday of ancient Rome. A time to bring on the festival of love, to commemorate the suckling of Romulus and Remus the twins who founded Rome, by a wolf. Christianity brought religion and saints into the celebration, with several martyrs linked to the name St. Valentine. But the important one was a tortured and beheaded priest of Rome who fell to fate Feb. 14 in the year 270. The linking of love tokens and gallantry with the day happened rather obscurely according to most historians. The closest explanation being that the Norman word for lover was galantin and these people pronounced the letter 'g' as V so there became a valentine-lover. Young men were known to present gifts to the lady of their choice on this day and soon ornate cards with romantic, touching messages were in vogue. Through the centuries, the love-oriented day has seen the giving of sweetheart roses, tussie-mussies, heart-shaped cakes, candies and lacey valentine cards. So it remains. A day for children, a day for lovers, a day for all, to express love. Say it to your Valentine today. save sale GOOD NEWS! THE GREAT JANUARY SALE HAS BEEN EXTENDED INTO FEBRUARY! Dear Ann Landers: I know I will never see this in print because you don't believe people like my mother exist Well, I'm writing to you anyway It will make me feel better My mother drove me absolutely nuts. We moved miles away in the interest of self-preservation. That still didn't prevent her from making my life miserable by mail She wrote nearly every day, giving me hell for something I said or did 25 years ago. Every letter described a new illness. Last year she was sure she was dying of cancer. I phoned her doctor and he said it was ridiculous. Her tests were perfect. After that scare I let her have it. I told her that I hope I will have her strength and vigor when I am her age that she should be thankful and stop complaining. Her reply: "If you can't write a decent letter to your sick, old mother. I'd rather not hear from you I took her at her word and stopped writing. I send a gift on her birthday and at Christmas and she receives a plant for Mother's Day, but we have no other communication Maybe I'm a rotten kid in your book but at least my stomach is no longer tied in knots and I don't shake when I see the mailman coming. Free At Last Dear Free: There are some extremely exasperating mothers in this world, and to pretend they don't exist is sheer lunacy. But it's too bad you didn't get some therapy years ago and learn to cope with the situation instead of running away from it. Children can't change their parents but they can unload their anger on professionals, get to know the whys and wherefores and learn to insulate themselves against a punitive, domineering or dependent relative. It's difficult but not impossible to love the and they, of course, are the ones who need love most Dear Am Leaden: How about printing the other side to the "Blistered Ear Lobes" sad story'' She's the gal who sold magazine subscriptions on the phone and was cussed out regularly for "a lousy an hour I'm Average Joe Citizen. I am sick and tired of being blasted by billboards, neon signs, TV and radio commercials, newspaper and magazine ads night and day. To have my personal telephone used as a cheap method for selling is an invasion of privacy and burns me up I invariably get those pesky phone pitches when I'm in the shower, eating, or reading something fascinating or trying to sleep. (My wife is a nurse and we both work irregular shifts) People should be able to leave their lines open for important calls and not have to pull out the jack in self-defense. I agree with "Lobes" that foul language is inexcusable, but I can see how those calls could make a person lose his temper. I have a stock answer Here it is "This is a private phone for MY convenience. It is not intended for soliciting." Then I boycott the product If you are fair, I will see this in print. Phone Weary Dear Weary: A surprising number of readers agree with you I'll tell you what I told them. You have a right to privacy and you can insure it by getting an unlisted number. It however, a legal method of selling and some people appreciate the convenience of buying something over the telephone.
