Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - February 14, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta Wednesday, February 14, 1973 - THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD _ 43 ... But They Alway Ring The Church Bell!! Fair time in Rio: some no-nos Whenever a merchant leans back and claims ... , . . I don't have to advertise. I've been on this corner for umpteen years - everybody knows what I've got!" . ... then he's wooing sales trouble. You see, they remember what he used to have - but they don't know that he has updated his merchandise to include new, modern lines. They don't want what he used to have - so they go on to his competitor, who told them of the new shiny wares on his shelves through his local newspaper. You see, the corner might be familiar - but the people aren't! It's just like the old church that stood on the corner for 75 years. "It was well-established - but the minister still rang the bell every Sunday morning!" Why not ring your bell EVERY WEEK through an ad in... RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -Rio's police have issued a series of restrictions for Carnival nextl month. A cold jail cell awaits revellers who: -Wear bikinis or tight bathing suits to parties. -Dress in clerical or military-like outfits. -Dance the samba in tunnels. -Throw plastic confetti or drink outdoors from anything made of glass. -Wear masks in public. -U s e costumes glorifying homosexuality or other "human vices and defects." Many of these no-nis are for safety's sake, but the over-all tone of the restrictions is set by the military-controlled government that has run Brazil for nine years. Rio's Carnival once was described as the wildest public spectacle in South America. Beautifully costumed "samba schools,' ' each with several thousand dancers, drummers and f 1 a g -b e a r e rs, paraded through downtown areas. In outlying neighborhoods, people formed samba groups or simply dressed in home-made costumes and danced in the streets for four days. Consumption of alcohol and narcotic-like inhalants was virtually uncontrolled. Homosexulas and female impersonators held special danc- es. Shootings and robberies were frequent. ONCE HERALDED LENT Carnival originally was a Roman Catholic holiday signifying the coming of Lent. In Brazil it evolved into a four-day national holiday and fiesta, with little religous meaning. The "samba schools" are still going strong in Rio. And millions of Brazilians look forward to Carnival as a chance to have fun or at least take a break from work. The dates this year are March 3-6. Carnival restrictions like those in Rio have not yet extended to smaller cities. People in the picturesque northeastern port city of Salvador still dress up in home-made clown suits and masks. They dance and drink in the streets until all hours. Here are 11 good reasons you gave us for buying a lightweight Kenmore automatic sewing machine.
