Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - February 13, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Wednesday, February 18, 1974 LETHBRIDQE HERALD -7 Young people switching from drugs to alcohol OTTAWA (CP) The federal health department is anxious to fund alcohol- related research and rehabilitation programs fol- lowing evidence that many young people are switching to alcohol from soft drugs as their first preference. The department does not have hard data about rising alcohol use, said Ronald Draper, head of the non- medical use of drugs directorate. But provincial authorities, social workers, parents and the young people themselves have indicated there is more drinking, he said. Funds for research and other related work are available from a grants program totalling more than million, Mr. Draper said Tuesday in an interview. The grants program had been used mainly to support drug research and community treatment programs. The directorate shifted more attention to alcohol Stanfieldplans brief visits to N.B., Quebec OTTAWA (CP) Con- servative Leader Robert Stanfield will mix business and pleasure this weekend during brief visits to New Brunswick and Quebec. The LARGEST ASSORTMENT of imported styles in LETHBRIDGE Mr. Stanfield will be in Moncton Friday morning where he will hold a news con- ference before travelling to Newcastle. In Newcastle he will participate in a radio open line show He will fly to Quebec City Friday night and the next day will be involved in a variety of winter carnival events. He will attend a carnival breakfast Saturday morning, view the peewee hockey finals at noon, tour ice sculptures in the afternoon and watch the carnival parade in the evening. starting last year, and the change in emphasis was reinforced by the final Le Dain commission report, published last December, which named alcohol a major health hazard. FOCUSED ON DRUGS The directorate was set up in 1971 following the interim report of the royal commission headed by Toronto law professor Gerald Le Dain. The directorate, focused on illicit drugs and cigarette smoking because those were the occupations at the time. Recently, only three accept- able research projects in alco- hol use have come forward for funding from the directorate and these have been in the biomedical field, said Mr. Draper. What was wanted was more research in the social and be- havioral aspects of alcohol abuse, as well as studies to in- dicate the impact of alcohol on family life, work performance and petty crime. The object is to get data to help in drafting various regu- latory policies, data which was lacking when the provinces lowered the legal drinking ages, he said. The directorate was also be- ginning to organize community information programs and publish literature warning of ihe health hazards of alcohol. Comedian to remain in seclusion LOS ANGELES (AP) Comedian Sandy Baron, who had not been heard from since he checked out of a New York hotel Jan. 8, called his manager Tuesday to say he is OK, the manager said. "He's perfectly all said Walter Scott, who has managed the 37-year-old entertainer for the last six years. Scott said Baron told him he is and has been in seclusion at a friend's apartment in New York City, and has no plans at present to come out of hiding. Scott said Baron told him he had been unaware of a country wide search for him, but he declined to say exactly where he was. Scott and others close to Baron had speculated that the comedian had withdrawn to solve some personal problems which had caused him to be depressed. They attributed the main part of his problem to the break up of his second marriage. Baron was scheduled to be in Los Angeles Jan. 7 to make a guest appearance on a television series. He also was to begin rehearsals for a play in San Diego.
