Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - February 13, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta 38 THE LETHBRIDQE HERALD Wadnaaday, February Brain chemistry altered by different types of food NEW YORK (AP) What you eat apparently can affect the chemistry of your brain. And any change may affect appetite, sleep, sexual activity and other behavior, two scientists report. A steak dinner or a spaghetti dinner might have quite different effects, their findings suggest In animal studies, the scientists found different types of foodstuffs can alter the amount of a powerful chemical, serotonin, involved in the activity of brain nerve cells. Carbohydrates sugars and starchy foods like spaghetti increase the available serotonin. Protein foods, like steak or milk, reduce it, say John Fernstrom and Richard Wurtman of Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass. What the effects may be in humans has not been demonstrated. But animal studies by other researchers have shown: deprived of brain serotonin become insomniacs, and male and female rats show exaggerated sexual activity. levels of brain serotonin make rats more' sensitive to pain, more likely to sleep, and reduce their appetite. There is evidence that in The BEE HIVE CENTRE VILLAGE MALL SIDEWALK SALE! He is director of MIT's laboratory of Neuroendocrine Regulation. Dr. Fernstrom is assistant professor of nutritional biochemistry and metabolism. They said it had been thought that the brain was not affected bj diet except through chronic malnutrition. Their evidence is that what a person eats may affect brain activity within 20 to 30 minutes. Serotonin, a substance produced in a special set of neurons or brain cells, when released into spaces between neurons, is partly responsible for the flow of information for messages between neurons. The findings suggest that food intake can affect the way neurons sense bodily states, and help the brain decide whether to be hungry or sleepy, for example. Humans drinking a quart of milk protein or a quart of ginger ale carbohydrate showed similar changes in their blood as did rats after high protein or high carbohydrate meals, Dr. Wurtman said It seems, the scientists write, that food consumption may affect brain chemistry, and brain chemistry, in turn, may affect food consumption. People seeking an oil change cause new crisis VANCOUVER (CP) Pharmacies in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island appear to be experiencing a cod Over oil crisis because of people seeking an oil change. Greg Sheldon, office manager of Stanley Drugs Ltd. in North Vancouver, Wholesale Suppliers, said this week he was uncertain when new orders would be coming through. Spot checks at pharmacies in Vancouver, North and West Vancouver, New Westminster and Victoria showed many had run dry. Most pharmacists said the demand was for raw, bottled cod liver oil, not oil in capsules. "We haven't had such a demand for 20 said one. All agreed the sudden demand stemmed from recent lectures delivered by self-styled nutrition theorist Dale Alexander of California. Mr. Alexander claimed then, and says in a book, that cod liver oil shaken in milk will "bypass the greedy liver" and help to lubricate the joints. He maintains that the body, like a car, needs oil and .oil changes and adds that cod liver oil is beneficial to those suffering from arthritis, rheumatism and stiffness. Dr. Leslie Truelove, associate medical director of the Arthritis and Rheumatism Society in Vancouver, put the skids, however, to Mr. Alexander's theory. "There's an anatomical problem about said Dr. Truelove. "Everything digested goes through the liver."
