Film critic thinks Disney shows 6bacP for children Show Times By DICK KLEINER HOLLYWOOD (NEA) Richard Schickel is one of our more eminent and skillful movie critics, working for Time Magazine. He has two daughters and I wondered whether he lets them see whatever films they want to see. "I let them see most he says, "within reason. I feel that some R rated pictures are better than some G rated pictures they tend to promote family discussion, which is good. "I feel Disney films are bad. They are harmful to a child's mental health. They show a silly, perverted way of life." Being a critic, Schickel has naturally been a target of many producers whose movies he has panned. He takes that in his stride but ob- jects to those who say critics are enemies of moviemakers. "We wouldn't be in the business to start he says, "unless we basically lik- ed the movies." His new book is a reflection of his love for the movies. "The Shape of Laughter" is a brief biography and a filmography of Harold Lloyd. "It's just a hack Schickel says. Life was going to issue a Lloyd movie and felt a book would help promote the movie. They own the publishing house (N.Y. Graphic Society) that asked'me to do the book. But I always liked Lloyd as a per- former, so it was fun to do." Most history books pay little attention to entertainment but William Manchester's monumental new "narrative history" of the last 40 years of the United States weaves in much about the world of show business amid the other facts and figures. "Most histories concentrate on politics and Manchester says. "But I feel strongly that there is much more to history.than that the popular things, such as the lively arts, fashion and sports. BOMBERS STRIKE TYRE, Lebanon (Reuter) Ail explosion rocked the of- fices of the American Life In- surance Co. Tuesday, causing heavy damages, but no casualties were reported. The Arab communist organization, an underground movement, claimed re- sponsibility. "Movies and radio were im- portant in our history, par- ticularly as they were the last things the family participated in as a group. I'll always remember 'the Philadelphia because our whole family saw'it together. And we used to gather around the radio and listen to Jack Benny or Fred Allen or Charlie McCarthy and Edgar Bergen." Manchester's first step, when he began the book, he says, was to go back through the last 40 years of The World Almanac's annual chronology. That gave him the framework he needed. Then he fleshed it out with other sources. The result, "The Glory and The is pages of excitement. The book, in- cidentally, is dedicated to Manchester's daughter, Laurie, 11. When it came out, she was somewhat disap- pointed to find her picture wasn't on the back cover, along with her father's. She felt that the person to whom the book was dedicated should have had at least a small pic- ture on it. ORDERS RELEASE CAIRO (AP) President Anwar Sadat on Tuesday ordered the release of Abdel Mohsen Abul Nur, former secretary general of the governing Arab Socialist Union. Abul Nur was arrested in May, 1971, and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment on charges of involvement in an alleged abortive coup against Sadat led by former vice- president Aly Sabry.
