Calgary professor advocates politics for social workers EDMONTON (CP) -Social workers must lay the ground work for redistribution of wealth in Canada, a Calgary professor told a workshop for social workers over the weekend. Prof. Ben Carniol said that "daily, we Canadians consent to the tremendously harsh conditions those in poverty must endure." He presented statistics to the Alberta Association of Social Workers' annual conference to show a handful of Canadians control the country's economy. "If we do a proper educational job, the public will no, longer consent to handful of people controlling the destiny of the nation To truly help their clients, social workers must enter the political arena, said Mr. Carniol, who holds degrees in law and social work. He said it is part of a social worker's professional responsibility to become involved in advocacy on behalf of his clients. Social workers interested in more effective lobbying for change should align themselves with other social workers and professional groups as well as clients, Prof. Carniol said. Jean Anderson of Calgary said a survey among 180 welfare recipients she conducted last year in Calgary showed 74 per cent of them were unaware of the procedures by which they can appeal decisions of their social workers. The association has launched an advocacy project to act as an ombudsman for social workers' clients. Only a month old, the project is already looking into charges that an unnamed Alberta nursing home was exploiting clients by making profits from its food budget. Project members also are looking into the department of health and social development's regarding welfare recipients living in common-law relationships, University of Calgary professor Andrew Armitage told the conference. In a recent column you said, "For every lonesome guy in this world there are two lonesome girls." Not true. If you eliminate the widowed (mostly older) and divorcees (who wants and look only at the single women who have never married, you will find there are about three million more men than women who have never entered into the blesseo state of matrimony. I didn't care for it the first time. I liked it even less the second. My husband and 1 have been sending Christmas letters for several years and our friends and relatives say they are wonderful. What's more, we love to receive them. It gives us an opportunity to catch up on what's happening to the people we care about. Granted some of the letters lay it on a bit heavy and are too long. I agree that anything beyond one page is a bore, but most Christmas letters are delightful. I feel let down when I open a large envelope and find only a printed card and a name at the bottom, also printed no evidence that it was sent by a human. I'll take the Newsletter, any time. Chicago. MSS4. one in 500 public assistance clients appeals a decision of his social worker, but there must be more potential client dissatisfaction since each year social workers make many decisions about welfare clients. He admitted the project is potentially a source of conflict within the association since advocate social workers could make things difficult for other social workers on behalf of clients. Sky rockets great hobby MONTREAL (CP) A fascination for things extra- terrestial is one of several reasons why Yves Legault likes to work with his hands. Mr. Legault, a programming department employee with the CBC Montreal bureau, has for the last six years been building scale models of rockets and lunar vehicles, both real and imaginary. In 1989, working from photo- graphs, he took ISO hours to build an eight-foot .model of the giant Saturn V rocket, used by the U.S. for their manned moon landings. With glue, scissors and a little ingenuity, Mr. Legault used silver-painted marbles as helium tanks, cotton swabs as ladders and painted straws tipped with buttons as landing pads. The rocket separates into three stages to reveal minature rocket engines and is complemented by a Lunar Excursion Vehicle (LEM) driven by a three-quarter-inch figurine. The Saturn rocket is but one of the 26 models in Mr. Legault's collection, which in- clude Soviet rockets and a futuristic space station, built after he saw the science- fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
