The gold rush is on once again, this time at Lethbridge, Alber- ta, as the 1975 Canada Winter Games get under way on February 11. CfiC-TV will be there to watch young athletes, all hungry for gold to bring back to their home provinces. For those who aren't yet familiar with the Games schedule, the events cover badminton, basketball, boxing, curling, fencing, figure skating, gymnastics, hockey, judo, skiing, speed skating, synchronized swimming, table tennis, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling. Sixteen events in all, with medals for the lucky winners and cheers and accolades for everyone. The figure skating will be held at trie Lethbridge Sportsplex which can seat spectators. In the first Winter Games, held in Quebec City in 1967, top individual winner was 13 year old Terese McDonald of Scar- borough, Ontario. Terese walked away with four gold medals in gymnastics, one silver and one team gold medal. At the second Games, held in Saskatoon in 1971, Wendy Nicholson, a 14 year old from Toronto, was top individual per- former with three golds. Ontario dominated the point standings in both previous Games, with B.C., Quebec and Alberta coming on strong. The medal standings, which do not necessarily correspond to point standings, showed Manitoba coming in third in the '71 Games, behind only Ontario and B.C. It is also worthy of note that Prince Edward Island copped a share of the glory by capturing the Centen- nial Trophy, awarded in 1971 to the team showing the greatest improvement over their previous Games total. CBC-TV cameras will be focussing on this year's winners, bringing Cana- dian viewers all the action, much of it live, as it happens.
